Setting up a Proxy Server Need Help

Hi,
I am currently have a LAMP server set up and would like to turn it into a proxy server. I really don't know where to start besides Wikipedia etc. Would anyone have a guide or be able to explain the basic concepts of a proxy server? Also is there a apt-get type of install for a proxy server?

Wow that was great, is there anyway to make it a secure proxy? I mean somthing like ie HTTPS instead of HTTP ? BTW Thanks for the links,
