I'm a (very) recent convert to Ubuntu, and have been listening to you podcast with interest, so first of all, keep up the good work guys.

Next, a few questions :

1. I was wondering if James got round to setting up his hydra machine, and if so what were his impressions (and difficulties) ?

2. I built my own PVR/HTPC with gbpvr (Win2k). I've been running it for a couple of years now and have tweaked it to perfection. However, at the time I built it, my original plan was to use freevo or mythtv. I basically gave up after a hair-pulling month of frustration (due to my inexperience in Linux), but I did gain an insight into Linux and more specifically Debian (I was using a Knoppix install). Fast-forward to 2006, after reading an article about Mac programmers switching to Ubuntu, I gave it a spin and fell in love with it. No more recompiling the kernel just to get sound, ... So my question is, do any of you have any experience with using Ubuntu (or flavours) as a PVR/HTPC setup ?

3. I'm also a professional web developper (PHP and Typo3 mainly). Now, using Eclipse (and phpeclipse) most of the time at work, under WinXP, it wasn't too difficult for me to become productive with Ubuntu. Especially since I also easily set up Fireworks 8 and Flash 8 under wine (can't seem to get Dreamweaver 8 running though). Now, I know I might get flamed for saying this sort of thing, but do you really think that the Linux world will ever offer serious competitors to the "industry standards" (Photoshop and Dreamweaver come to mind, Gimp doesn't do CMYK and Nvu, BlueFish ... , OpenOffice lacks some important features such as versioning and multiple user comments, and don't even get me started with looking for a decent replacement for Outlook), or will the best we can hope for is "catch-me ups" or running win apps in wine ? And if so are there any new exciting projects in the works ? (I insist, this is a question, not a taunt)

You can run most Windows programs (like Flash) under Wine.

Also, I use Eclipse under Ubuntu, just search for it in the repos :)!

sorry, I wasn't clear, it's because I already used Eclipse in Windows that I installed it in Ubuntu.

Being able to use exactly the same software in Linux does help to make the transition easier (that's why TheOpenCD.org is such a good idea)

Bluefish is much better than eclipse in my opinion for Gnome Web Development and for KDE you want Quanta Plus. Try NVU out. What is hydra if it is 64 bit then you may want to compile stuff so go get build-essential, automake, and checkinstall. If you want to automate compiling go over to the Edgy Forum and grap my little app Ubuntu Easy Compiler (UEC) which will automate the process post back if you need help installing after reading the README. Currently it is not so easy, I am working on it though (hiding the processes and only reporting errors, GUI, Advanced mode, and automake mode, as well as first run mode which will check for and install build-essential, checkinstall and automake)
