Be welcome in a GNU world with dyne:bolic!

You don't need to install anything, you don't even need an harddisk to run a whole free software operating system running out of the box on your PC! Download the ISO-image, burn your own CD, reboot your machine and you'll get back true love ;^)
dyne:bolic is shaped on the needs of media activists, artists and creatives as a practical tool for multimedia production: you can manipulate and broadcast both sound and video with tools to record, edit, encode and stream, having automatically recognized most device and peripherals: audio, video, TV, network cards, firewire, usb and more; all using only free software!

http://img374.imageshack.us/img374/1376/dancingtux8if.gif (http://imageshack.us)

http://www.dynebolic.org/img/dyne-dir.png You can employ this operating system without the need to install anything, and if you want to run it from harddisk you just need to copy a directory: the easiest installation ever seen! It is optimized to run on slower computers, turning them into a full media stations: the minimum you need is a pentium1 or k5 PC 64Mb RAM and IDE CD-ROM, or a modded XBOX game console - and if you have more than one, you can easily do clusters. http://www.dynebolic.org/img/recycle.png

dyne:bolic is RASTA software (http://rastasoft.org/resistance.txt) released free under the GNU General Public License (http://gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html).
This software is about Digital Resistance ina babylon world which tries to control and market the way we communicate, we share our interests and knowledge.
The roots of the Rastafari movement (http://www.bookfinder.us/review6/0865430357.html) are in resistance to slavery: this software is one step in the struggle for Redemption and Freedom from proprietary and closed-source software.

I burned and loaded the new version of dyne:bolic 2.1 and I have to say that dyne:bolic rocks, I think I may replace windows XP all together on this computer (my newest computer with Intel EM64T 64 bit dual core).

I love the look and feel and ease of use with dyne:bolic.

Dyne:bolic is a good little distro, with software you will literally not find elsewhere.

I've used an older version of Dyne:bolic, where the file manager refused to work on my friend's laptop. It also hung while I used Samba to copy files from that laptop to my computer. But still, if it works properly on your computer (it does on mine), then it's a good choice, especially for older hardware.

I love the docking and nesting features - you can copy most of the data to a FAT or Ext partition, so when the CD starts up it retrieves new programs and data from your hard disk, freeing up your drive.

I use it on very new hardware and find it the distro of choice. The nesting feature is pretty sweet.

ok I am back on dyne:bolic, I was going to install Sabayon but it stalled at 62% of load on the live CD, I took it as a sign.

I came back to dyne:bolic because it was of the few distros that can play movies with no problems on xine.

Docking (http://lab.dyne.org/Docking?action=fullsearch&value=Docking&literal=1&case=1&context=180)

DynebolicFaq (http://lab.dyne.org/DynebolicFaq) : http://lab.dyne.org/modern/img/moin-www.png dyne:bolic homepage (http://dynebolic.org/)

Is it possible to install dynebolic on a hard disk? If so, what filesystems are supported?

As of version 1.2, yes! This procedure is called "docking", and all you have to do is copy the entire dyne/ directory and subdirectories to the root directory of your hard disk (using Winblows for example that would result in C:\\dyne\), whether you have got ext2/3, reiserfs, NTFS, all kind of DOS FAT, BeOS, or *BSD. Hehe! Afterwards you have to boot up normally using your dyne:bolic cd, which will automatically recognize the harddisk partition that contains the dyne/ subdirectory, therefore ejecting the dyne:bolic cd and booting up the image from harddisk. Easy, ain't it?
how can i install grub/lilo and still able to boot my windowz ??

What if I didn't want to use the cd?

You can, as long as you are using a bootloader such as GRUB or LILO (beeing very careful) and dedicating a partition for dynebolic (please refer to the http://lab.dyne.org/modern/img/moin-www.png Nesting (http://lab.dyne.org/Nesting) faq in order to do that), in which, as stated you will have to copy the whole dyne/ directory off the cd:
Grub configuration:Add the following to your grub.conf file:
title Dynebolic
kernel (hdX,Y)/dyne/Linux root=/dev/ram0 rw load_ramdisk=1 prompt_ramdisk=0 ramdisk_start=0 vga=ZZZZZ max_loop=128
initrd (hdX,Y)/dyne/initrd.gz...-(the "kernel" line must not be wrapped up)-where X=harddisk and Y=partition where your dyne/ directory is (for example (hd0,0) would mean first hardisk, first partition; (hd1,0) second harddisk, first partition; (hd0,1) first harddisk, second partition and so on...)
As for the vga option, please refer to the chart further on, substituting the ZZZZZ number with the hexadecimal number of your choice.

Is it possible to use a special partition with the iso on it?

I want to boot dyne:bolic on my hard drive with the iso image mounted, I know this is doable, I just need a script or documentation, where can I find that?
See http://lab.dyne.org/modern/img/moin-www.png http://freaknet.org/martin/dynebolic/ (http://freaknet.org/martin/dynebolic/) for some notes and helper scripts. --rurban

Dyne:Bolic all the way !! As I have said before, this has taken over from DSL as my favourite mini-distro.

The drag'n'drop install should be a model for every live distro that fits on one CD.

Just point the menu.lst to the Dyne:Bolic kernel and hey presto boot from GRUB.

Imagine this as a partition setup:

|Boot|Ext3|Ext3|Ext3|Ext3|Ext3|SWAP| (or how ever many partitions)

You throw in a live cd, it automatically mounts and gives root access to ALL partitions.
You take a folder from the live cd and drag'n'drop it into any partition you want. Distro installed !!
How cool would that be, as an Ubuntu/Mepis/Gentoo [add your favourite distro] installation system ?

Dyne:Bolic rocks for speed, install, apps. If you haven't tried it yet, give it a go, you can even drop it into your Ubuntu Home folder.

And if you don't like it? Delete the Dyne folder. There cannot be an easier distro-uninstall than that.

I have decided to start a series of threads specifically for technical help for other Distros...the Distro is listed in the thread title. This is primarily for Ubuntu users who test or use other distros and feel most comfortable seeking help in our own community. In no way does this superceed the help you should also be getting from the perspective Distro., in fact I encourage you to be as active in their forums as you are here and post ideas, knowledge and solutions here to provide a reference point to share, reference links are encouraged.

I tried dyne:bolic just some days ago before I installed destopBSD... I thought it was very confusing, in fact, and not really that great. Sure, it's quick, but even so, I know I couldn't want to keep it :P

what is it based on? slackware, debian, redhat, etc? Or source? Is it really configurable and how does dyne compare with the other distros like zen, ubuntu, fedora, wolvix, sabayon, etc..., dsl linux?

dyne is:

1. Based on LFS, with significant ideas taken from Slax/Morphix/Puppy
2.
a. It can be extended via dyne packages on the fly, or the whole thing can be remastered.
b. It is a completely different animal. It is basically a media production tool that can be
morphed into a desktop, not the other way around.

I'm very impressed by it, in case you didn't notice.

I am sorry to say you are wrong dyne:bolic is NOT based on LFS!

it is an independently developed distro

I ran the ALSA Configurator in Dynebolic Live, which found & configured my sound card. However whenever I stream music from the Web Dynebolic crashes & has to be re-started.

I decided to install Dynebolic on a USB Stick & tried to create a Nest there first, to save my settings. I ran the command: cat /proc/partitions in a Terminal & identified the USB drive as sdd/sdd1,
blocks = 1998080/1997956. In the /mnt-Volumes Folder, the USB shows up as hd4, in Properties the size is 5120 B. When I use the Nest utility I get the message "no usb storage device found". What is the problem & how can it be solved?

Sound card: M-Audio Audiophile 2496
USB Drive: Crucial Gizmo 2GB
RAM: Crucial 1GB
CPU: AMD Sempron 3200+
Motherboard: ABIT AN7

I've tried Dynebolic now. I hate to say it, but it seems like a pile of crap. It took almost 10 minutes just to start up (WHEN it starts up), the programs took days to figure out, and to make matters even worse, the music programs work even worse than they do in Ubuntu.

Ardour is completely unintuitive, especially when paired with that annoying JACK program. I triked to import a 5 minute WAV audio track, it was cut off at less than 2 minutes. I tried to record a simple 2 track drum beat (kick/snare on one track, hi-hats on the other) just to see how it would line up. The kick/snare track crashed after 45 seconds after the computer said that the audio was too fast for the disk. The hi hats crashed after less than 20 seconds for the same reason.

Years ago I successfully ran Acid Pro 3 on through Windows 98 with a pentium 2, 64 MB ram, 7 GB of memory and was still able to handle a full recording of 10 tracks with no latency. Now I have a laptop that's less than one year old, has 1 GB ram, 160 GB memory and a pentium 4 chip that can't run 2 lousy tracks for a solid minute. Obviously my specs are more than up to par, so logically it must be the program.

If you haven't used dynebolic save your time. If you need something better buy a Tascam cassette 4-track off e-bay. This program is TERRIBLE!!
