by the way, you don't have to compile. use the one from http://wine.budgetdedicated.com

use this after you download it:

sudo dpkg --force-all -i /path/to/wine-something.deb

I managed to get farther than that, but I'm currently stuck doing this same procedure. I have installed hundreds of megs of libraries in an attempt to get it working, but to no avail. Here's where I'm currently stuck:

Any ideas?

I've run into so many errors trying to get Wine working on Kubuntu 6.06 64bit, I've come to wonder if people are joking when they say "I've got it to work."
This might be helpful to you. It got me a ways but now it's telling me I don't have the X11/Xorg visual compatability installed. This has been quite the learning process.

That's 100% where I'm at. I can't figure it out.

We're folliwng the HowTO quite well, huh? We over looked how to run ./configure.

LDFLAGS="-L/lib32 -L/usr/lib32 -Wl,-rpath,/lib32 -Wl,-rpath,/usr/lib32" ./configure
Thanks for pointing that out, #winehq. :-)

Now I'm getting an error when running wine WoW.exe -opengl
