I'd love to see USlab in 3.1 (see http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=215970). IMO it's a huge improvement over the default Dapper setup (I finally ditched Windows after getting it going).

Hi, I'm new to the forums.

For the next release I'd like this problem to be solved please. I get these error messages and I also had the same problem as other people with the repositories not being linked properly.

Thanks

Hi all.

Please tell us what you want in EasyUbuntu 3.1!

Thanks!

1: automatic xgl setup... (and an easy revert back if it doesn't work). I've had several abortive experiences trying to follow the the various howtos on these forums.

2: DVD/CDrom drives set to DMA on by default.

The DMA is a kernel compliation issue, isn't it?

No,

just a simple matter of adding the correct item to the end of a configuration file so that it will be enabled on next boot.

see here:

http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper#How_to_speed_up_CD.2FDVD-ROM

How to speed up CD/DVD-ROM

* Read #General Notes

e.g. Assumed that /dev/cdrom is the location of CD/DVD-ROM

sudo hdparm -d1 /dev/cdrom
sudo cp /etc/hdparm.conf /etc/hdparm.conf_backup
sudo gedit /etc/hdparm.conf

* Append the following lines at the end of file

/dev/cdrom {
dma = on
}

* Save the edited file

the first hdparm line merely enables it immediately, the remainder ensures that it will be enabled during the next boot.

EasyUbuntu would have to do some simple tests to determine what the device name is in the remote case that it is different... ie. what actually gets mounted to the media mount point.

Mine has two DVD drives (one read only, one RW) and so I've had to specify /dev/hdc & /dev/hdd

OK here's my vision.

Easy ubuntu can be much bigger, we're talking a lot more apps/drivers etc within it.

Basically, I'd like easybuntu to contain a lot more drivers. I reckon if we can make easyubuntu a seriously good and full app, we can get many more people to switch to ubuntu.

- Automatic XGL configuration
- A lot more drivers
- Alternative apps to main ones in ubuntu instillation, such as kopete

If we can get easyubuntu to contain these features and other ones much wanted, we can get a lot more people to switch.

Currently freespire is a good upcoming distro, but that's because it contains propriety software which is pretty much needed for the newbie.

Now, ubuntu is brilliant, and I personally don't think it should contain propriety software - that should be easyubuntus job.

Once you pass to 3.1, we'll reach a big step, that being a nice .deb file which contains all software needed for offline instillation.

If we can get XGL implemented somehow for the more daring user that will be a bonus, but if we can get as much driver support in there as possible, that would be the biggest major factor of making people happy. This driver support will have to be quite advanced. For example, BCM drivers are not mature yet, and often don't work even in the new linux kernel (2.6.17) so, if we can get a configuration automater which installs and uses ndiswrapper to check your card name, then downloads/grabs the file from the cd/internet that would be a big step too.

DMA won't be in 3.1. We have another feature to do, and we cut DMA for this important feature.

I'd like to see ndisgtk in there, definitely.

I have a simple question, where are temporal .deb packages stored? Are they deleted once you have installed them?

One thing that keeps me using Windows is because of its excellent hardware support.

I have HP 3550 printer and I'm using it smoothly with WinXP.
What bothers me is that when I checked out the list of printers supported by Ubuntu, my HP 3550 isn't there.

I just want my printer to be added in Ubuntu hardware supported list. Thanks.

I used EasyUbuntu a while ago. Does it have an option to install Adobe Reader?

Why all of the XGL talk, with no mention of AIGLX? If one is added then I think the other should be (anyway, it is Compiz that does the actual work). It would be cool if there is a button to add Composite extensions to Xorg.conf and get xcompmgr, and maybe gcompmgr, the tool which gives easier control over it (the only problem I know with Composite is that it screws up the enlightenment in the repos, but the newer 0.16.8 version fixes that)

I also think there should be an option to put the radeon graphics card driver into xorg.conf, since it is not supported by xserver-xorg's configuration utility. I know it is used by the LiveCD by default (I am not sure about newly installed systems) but the fact that xserver-xorg's configuring tool doesn't know about it makes even changing resolutions harder since xorg.conf needs to be changed later (And I DO mean radeon, not fglrx. I wrote a page here if you want to see what's involved https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver )

I like the Listen music player, so that could be added. (it's URL is http://listengnome.free.fr )

I'd also like to see an option to install BOINC, since at the moment it just lies in Universe until users actively seek it out (boic-client provides a system service, whilst boinc-manager or kboincspy give a graphical interface depending on GNOME or KDE). There could even be a wizard-style interface to join the http://worldcommunitygrid.org and their Ubuntu Linux team. Something like this is not a particularly sought-after feature, but I think adding it to EasyUbuntu would generate a lot more knowledge about it, and since it doesn't do any harm this can only be a good thing.
