I am currently a die hard XP SP2 user. However, I have tried the Ubuntu Live and I am sort of hooked.. However, not enough to completely abandon my current setup.

I would like to install Ubuntu on a seperate partition and have a multi boot system. I have searched for information on this and haven't found it. Probably because I am new to this forum.

Can someone steer me in the right direction?

Thank you!

As long as you install Ubuntu onto its own partition or drive (so you don't overwrite Windows), the setup program will automatically set up a dual-boot for you.

TIP: On rare occasions, GRUB (the boot manager) may screw up and refuse to boot the system. In such a case, stay patient and come here for help. 99.99999% of bootloader problems, as serious and catastrophic as they seem, are easily solved via non-evasive techniques. Don't give up and reformat!

It is possible to shrink the NTFS partion on your drive and make room for Linux, but at this point, I would suggest you add a second hard drive. This way you will not disturb your XP install and grub, GRand Unified Bootloader, should be installed on the 2nd drive as well. This way, if you decide Linux is not for you, you can go back to M$ only by removing the 2nd drive.

If you decide to shrink the NTFS partion, I would recommend picking up a copy of Partion Magic 8. Linux also has a simiar gui based program called QParted.

I have been running Linux for about 3 years now full time. The only two Windows programs I use are Quicken and TurboTax which both run very will in Codeweavers Crossover Office version 4.2rc2. There are also solutions from VMware and Win4Lin for running Windows 98, ME, Win2000, and WinXP as a quest O/S within Linux.
