I'm having trouble with scorched 3D. I installed the version from the repositories. The game starts up fine and I can play it but there's something wrong with the fonts. Names of other players are fine but all the status display info is a mess.
Am I missing some dependencies or maybe just a font I need to install?

Hmmmm...try with latest and see if the problem goes away. Uninstall the one from the repo, go to http://www.scorched3d.co.uk/downloads.php and download the debian/ubuntu .deb package and double click it.

Still having the same problem with fonts. I'm using kubuntu so maybe there are some fonts I don't have. Any other ideas.

Try start Scorched 3D in the konsole and see if any error shows up. Also check if there's any error.log in /.scorched3d

I ran it from console initially. No errors. No error log either. The game isn't crashing or anything. Just odd fonts. The fonts for other players names are fine, as are theones in the inital game menu.

I'm guessing you're using XGL/Compiz? If so, go to the "One Thread to rule them all" and see the instructions for nonXgl which basically runs the game without XGL.

Bingo. That's sorted that out thanks. I feel like a bit of an idiot to be honest. I should have understood what I was doing when I installed XGL. At least I understand it now. Didn't actually like the default setup of compiz anyway so there's no great loss in getting rid of it.
