Probably a dumb question, but I haven't been able to find a straight answer. Is the Linux version included with the standard UT2004? So, if I were to buy this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0001M0HE6/026-1283150-8543659?v=glance&n=300703&s=gateway&v=glance), would it work under Linux?

There's no special Linux version of UT2004. The Linux installer is already included on the UT2004 media. So yes, you can buy it anywhere you like.

Being a good spokesperson for Linux, I would encourage you to buy from http://www.tuxgames.com/ Being that it will show up as a Linux sale and not a windows sale.

It runs really well BTW :) OpenGL rendering, really smooth on my machine.
You literally just run the linux installer from the CD / DVD and it takes you through the install - much easier than I was expecting ;) I copied the CD to my PC to install it as the installer wouldn't run from the disk for some reason.
The patch update is a bit more tricky though because of file permissions. I had to run sudo file-roller, make the changes to a couple of files in the patch archive for my version of PC (AMD64) and extract to the UT base folders.

If you install UT2004 to /home then you don't have to mess about with file permissions when patching - just a straight copy / paste of the patch files.

It's best to copy the linux installer onto your desktop, & then run the installer from there.

I installed ut2004 on a new build of kubuntu. I have a nvidia fx 5500 agp card and 512 of mem. I also was able to install the nvidia drivers and everything looks awesome......until I start to play. It lags something terrible. I have tried several different kernels with no change. My question is.....what do most of you run, kubuntu or ubuntu and does it make much of a diff. Most of what I read on these forums is everyone uses a config very similar to mine with no problems. Oh processor is a 2.6 celeron
thanks for any input.....

The only thing with this is mods sometimes look for a default path. I hit this problem recently with Alien Swarm.

Just downloaded the demo and it works great. There are a bunch of installers for updates and mods here (http://www.liflg.org/?catid=6&gameid=17)

UT2004 is VERY VERY heavy on the machine. The lag may well be down to the spec of your machine and not anything to do with the OS. It really needs 500MB of RAM all to itself to run properly, is very CPU intensive and your FX5500 may well struggle a bit - it's probably the RAM though. May be worth trying lower detail settings if poss.
Pop over to the forums at www.unrealtournament.com and ask there, quite a few people run UT on Linux. :)

I made a couple of changes to xorg.conf after reading a few threads and then installed ubuntu-desktop (gnome) and beilieve it or not it runs awesome. no lag, great graphics..... so I booted back into kubuntu and it lagged again. As much as I like to run kde over gnome I will boot to gnome for ut2004. I did try all the detail settings at the lowest and it made no difference. The lag didnt matter if it was online or hosted on my own pc.
I am running 2.6.15.26 686 kernel also
thanks for the reply.....

People, I need some advice here. I do a WinXP/Ubuntu 7.04 dual boot. I have UT2004 already installed in Windows. Is there I way I can play it in linux without installing the whole game directory again...could I just add in the required system files to play in linux. If I can, how? :)

Somewhat UT related but not. Does the linux version for some reason use a different cd key? I tried entering my cd key in a couple of times and it says it's invalid, but when i installed it under my windows side (a month or so ago) it worked.
