I have an old ibm aptiva (450 Mhz processor, 256 megs of ram, 15 gig hard drive) and I am trying to run Starcraft with wine. The problem is that it works (with the latest version of wine) but it is INCREDIBLY slow. It wasnt that slow when I had windows on it, so I was wondering what to do: tweak wine, tweak some video properties or switch to a different os. If anyone could offer some advice, that would be great :D.

Here's a trick, go to a windows operating system and copy the .dll files and install them in your wine directory. It should show some improvement.

Also, there is a possibility it could work better with an earlier version of wine, I've seen people commenting on it. Apparently some older versions perform better than the latest versions for some old games.

There is also a non-wine based solution called SCSharp which is an attempt to re-implement the StarCraft engine written in C# I'm not sure how far along it is but it may be worth a try.
