Ok I went through about 20 Distros today, process of elimination...
I have come back to Sabayon Linux specifically RR64 mini edition
Here is a screenshot and a question:
http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/5514/snapshot1lt4.png
I have to say this is the most fast and responsive distro. clean, sharp and easy.
Now like most Distros you have to load the codecs, my question is what is the most easy and fastest way to do this?

This is their codec pack.

Out.Of.The.Box
I thought we were looking for "outoftheboxiness" ?
I like the look of it too, that "klik!" installer looks interesting, just been reading their website. What about the codecs though? Arent you running 64 bit?
note:
AMD64 architecture
The Windows Codecs package cannot be used directly by the AMD64 distribution. Some people solve this problem by installing the i386 Ubuntu distribution inside a chroot (for example, Linux Vserver (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VServer) or https://help.ubuntu.com/htdocs/ubuntu/img/u-www.png dchroot (http://packages.ubuntu.com/breezy/admin/dchroot)), and this works very well.
Is this the same for other distros?

LOL it is supposed to have all the codecs, but my screwy BIOS menu is missing the boot from DVD option so I had to use the mini edition.
I am willing to figure out how to get everything working on my end.
This is the fastest most beautiful distro I have come across and the forums are friendly and helpfull.

i burned Sabayon and restarted my box w/ the DVD in the tray ... wasn't working @ first, so i did a "legacy" mode boot - it worked, but was severely crippled ... i then did a boot: gentoo pnpbios=off and it got this weird garbled text on my screen (it wasn't showing me boot progress) ... i let it go for a few minutes (staring @ that text) and heard the "i'm detecting your network card" beep and was prompted w/ a gnome login ... so it's kinda working, i just need to try something like boot: gentoo pnpbios=off opengl=ati resolution=1600x1200 and see if that works ...
on the + side: the fglrx drivers were loaded up w/o me doing anything (whoa!) ... albeit it was an older version, but i can deal w/ that :D --- and i must say, that is one full featured LiveDVD ... i was able to browse network shares immediately ...

Word of warning be carefull with FreeBSD, I to had success with PC-BSD.
So I went to install FreeBSD on my newer computer, thought it would be nice to set up a dual boot to XPsp2....well the install went fine without event, long but fine....but 98% of the way through the install it failed. It wiped out my XPsp2 too.
Not a great loss I have been looking to replace XPsp2 but I would have rather set up a dual boot.
Now thanks to FreeBSD I will be just running Linux on it. Again not a great loss just a bit of an annoyance.
So I decided to install Gentoo...I must say as much as the Gentoo installer looks scary...it is a marvel, simply awesome. The graphical partioner is better then Gparted or QTparted. I would have to say just as easy as Ubuntu if not a bit easier. I wish I would have taken screenshots all along the way to post but I was up late last night and a bit annoyed by FreeBSD.
The only problem is that even though the install went fine, the install of Grub failed.
Fortunately I have a CD of Super Grub, unfortunately it didn't help to boot Gentoo.
If anybody needs to partition their hard drive I highly recommend the Gentoo Installer to do this.
Tonight I will attempt to install Knoppix 5.0 (which by the way will soon be based on Ubuntu).

Well I know this is off topic but...Downloaded FreeBSD and burned it(K3b) threw it into the computer and all I had for the next 30 minutes was a flashing little bar. Burned it again(checked the Md5sum this time and clicked the option to verify) I was told success by the burning software, so I threw it in again and guess what? Little blinking bar on the screen. I think I'll stick to PCBSD for a BSD experience. Guess that's better than killing the PC though. Not real sure why it just froze there.

So I'm a bit late in posting. it's good to see I haven't
missed the party.
I'm sorry, I'm going to have to take issue with Sambayon.
I have the 3.0rc1 64-bit version. On my system at least it's
no faster than my 64-bit Ubuntu, and it absolutely refuses to
connect to the internet. In all fairness though, my Ubuntu is
severely pimped out, with a custom kernel (2.6.17.8 built for
speed), and ruthless application of orphaner, among other
optimizations. The internet problem may be due to the fact that
my provider is a total ***, insisting on static IPs and proxies.
Good performance for a liveCD though.
Here's my 32-bit Debian Etch. As befits such an august distribution,
my desktop is meant to be elegant yet fuctional.

I am currently using Archlinux 7.2 and here is a picture of my desktop. It's plain, simple, and fast.
Plain & fast it may be, simple it ain't. I haven't seen a worse installer for ages. I know it's a great distro from all the reports that i've seen, but (& i think they say this on their site) "Most definitely not NooB friendly!".....
I think i need to learn a lot more about Linux before attempting Arch. It looks damn good though, & thanks for the screenie! :)

must be your hardware buddy,...Sabayon boots for me in 8 to 15 seconds tops...the only thing I have seen boot faster is PC-BSD.
Sabayon is my Primary OS on my primary computer,...but I continue to use Ubuntu on my old computer.
Sabayon, is based in Gentoo and utilizes Emerge which is a pretty awesome tool over all and lightening fast compared to Synaptic Package Manager.

I got and installed the newest Sabayon dvd. My my, the guys have done a marvelous job with this distro. It is simply the most spell-bound distro I have installed with all codecs, flash, and other capabilities already there.
Berry / xgl works nicely on it compared to others that I have tried, and yet apps run fast with no lagging. I opened youtube videos and in a flash, they were all playing nicely without the timing issue you get b/w audio and video.
The install was very easy. The only drawback isthe boot time. Once booted, speed becomes the only definition I can use describe the experience with all those wobbly effects.
It is something to experience. I never cared for gentoo until Sabayon linux, but this one takes the cake.
I am currently focusing on learning how to manage or tame this beast, but most of the crazy steps have been done for you. Install steps are about as easy or similar to installing ubuntu, except that in DVD you install fluxbox, xfce, kde, gnome, and e16.
I shall play around some more with it when I get home. This distro may be replacing Zen and Ubuntu for my main machine. Still I would recommend Ubuntu over it for a totally new user wanting to start linux as I believe I can assist with Ubuntu issues if the forum doesn't take care of user's issue.
Sabayon comes ready with all the power and all the apps function wonderfully..
I may have found the new distro to be in. I would consistently run Ubuntu, Sabayon, and Zenwalk on my two PCs and a laptop, and see what happens. XFCE on Sabayon was very beautiful and functional. Gnome while beautiful, reported a bug to me with xorg. It did not hamer my use and visualization of berry..
You've got to try it.

KNOPPIX INSTALLED! is the fastest distro and most reliable installed on your hard drive, in spite of what people say and the official warning that KNOPPIX is only meant to be live. If this was so, why is it consistently the most reliable OS installed on my Hard Drive.
....Not to mention the easiest to install.
Upon install you have 3 options to choose from
1. Debian
2, Beginner
3. KNOPPIX INSTALLED!
I prefer KNOPPIX INSTALLED! essential it is a Debian-like system....that is faster then both Ubuntu and Debian. I must also say more reliable then Kanotix.
I just recently installed the KNOPPIX 5.0.1 8.0GB "Maxi" DVD

I don't know if this has alrady been said, but if so, I will say it again ;) :
I have found VMware server a great use when trying out different linux distros. Just search on these forums for 'VMware server' and you should find several different threads explaining how to use it.
VMware just virtualizes a computer and allows you to test the installer, compatability and usability of the installed OS without running the risk of accidentally killing the productivity of your computer. Another benefit is that you can do other things while testing your distro (so you don't have to wait through all those long install hours). Only drawbacks I have found so far is that it isn't terribly fast, it doesn't allow 64 bit stuff and there seem to be some problems with the 3D graphics capabilities.
Currently I am testing nothing, but I will soon go throuh testing a whole bunch of linux distros (as FreeBSD has given me nothing but pain and a good online community seems to be missing), select one and virtualize windows on it to eradicate the use for a dual boot once and forever.
The current list:
Sabayon Linux (picked it up here)
Zenwalk linux (Same story)
Gentoo (Used it for a while, loved it, but left it for reasons unclear even to me ;))
Edgy Ubuntu (still with Dapper here)
Arch Linux (Same story as Gentoo)
rPath Linux (again, picked it up here, sounds promising though!)

Thanks for that! Well, he is more pounding on the keyboard and pressing all the buttons on the tower to see what they do than computing at this point but I'm working on it!

NimbleX Cool, clean, simple (panel hiding enabled) & fast. Media player works "out-of-the-box" & the iso is only 200Mb i'm running it from cd right now but may install it to HD

Lol! The irony. Ubuntu must be the only distro ever concocted that you have been unable to install if that's the case :)

actually no, Debian and Ubuntu, but I can install Debian and Ubuntu derivatives that incorporate the knoppix hardware detection.
I do still run Ubuntu on an old 98 box, unfortunately it is soo slow that I have to finish uploading my photo collection and then either replace Ubuntu or just donate the box.
