Hi,

Has anyone tried installing Ubuntu on a beige G3?

Debian (specifically the Linux kernel) supports the beige G3 with no issues, so in theory the beige G3 should work. I know the boot process may be slightly different as I would have to use BootX, rather than the live CD.

I will have tried it myself by the end of the night on a spare G2/266, but I was just wondering if others here have already tried it...

Thanks,

Andrew McCall

So?

how did it work? I've been semi-desparate to try this as well with my beige g3.

Hello,
you know we are a lot of Beige G3 owners who really would like a light, free and modern OS to smoothly work on our machines.
As you suggested, Andrew, would you help me to ask The Ubuntu Project or someone interested, to write a special initrd (initial ram disk)?
That would allow the beige G3 to boot using BootX, and the installer would probably
need to have some slight modifications so that it detects and allows
configuration of beige G3 hardware such as sound and network cards,
the rest should work out of the box.
