Hello, all! I could use some help with an idea of mine. My girlfriend posed the question of what I would want as a tattoo and where if I could get one. I'm 19 and she's thinking of getting me tattooed for my 20th birthday. Well, I thought long and hard trying to find something that I'd always be in love with. Something that meant a lot to me. Something uniquely me. TUX! :) I figure it would be relatively small and just black, no color. I'm not sure what size exactly or where to put it on me. I'm a guy, by the way.

I'm calling on the linux community to help me out. I could use as many examples of others' linux-related tattoos. Any suggestions for different tux styles and designs would be helpful. Or perhaps some other geeky design. I'm sure there are some BSD daemon tats out there somewhere. Attached is the picture I found that I thought would make a cool tattoo. What do you think?

EDIT: if the link doesn't work, do a search on Google Images for "geek tattoo" and you will find lots of ideas.

BTW, I would be hesitant just because technology often changes in unforseen ways. Just my thought. Consider it carefully before you do it...tattoos aren't easily changed or removed later so think of this as a lifelong committment before you dive in.

Also, do some research on your tattoo artist first. Make sure they use good hygiene practices (everything comes out of a sealed, hermetic package or directly from an autoclave, they clean and sterilize everything properly, they wear gloves, etc.). Look at some photos of their work and make sure they are good--you don't want to be part of someone's learning curve, find someone with talent and experience, even if it costs you more...remember, this is a lifelong committment, get a good one. Good tattoos don't need to be fixed later.

So you know where I'm coming from, I have a tattoo that I love, but I know lots of people who wish they never had theirs done.

That there is some sound advice.

I have a Tattoo on my upper right arm that is easy to cover with a shirt/T-shirt.

However, The one I have on my left forearm (Stupid 16 year-old idea) is going to be removed with laser treatment. It will leave hardly any scarring, will have to be done in the winter, and is going to cost me nearly 800 in three sessions over six months.

My advice is, get something that is easy to cover, and spend at least 3 months on research.

A Linux tattoo? Wow. Better go ahead and marry this girl, because she's the last woman that you'll ever have sex with. :)

I would have just put a bash prompt somewhere on me.

I wish I never got mine.

There are some lessons that just have to be learned on their own.

A Tux tat has got to be better than this:

Tux tattoos are fairly common among geeks. They're usually placed on the upper arm. It looks cool

You could also try the Ubuntu logo.

The bash prompt is a kinda cool idea, but not my style. Thanks for all the solid advice, but I was really asking where you'd recommend I'd place it. I'm a little against the arm, but I'm willing to put it to a vote. Also, any other tux designs that you'd think would look cool? Or maybe something completely different linux related. I mean, shout out to Brunellus. Good idea.

Please keep 'em coming!

EDIT: Nah, I don't want a specific Ubuntu logo because although I may later switch distros and such, I'll always be a fan of Linux.

I second richbarna's recommendation that you put it in the upper arm, but this is really a personal decision. I want to echo my advice that you put it somewhere where you can show it off if you want to and also hide it easily if you need to.

You know, we've seen samples of Linux and Windows tattoos...here's some equal time with another idea to consider. :)

Hi guys! Sorry to re-open an old topic, but had this done last night! It's a bit shiny in places because I'd just washed the petroleum jelly the tattooist had put on there and was letting it dry!

Anyway, so chuffed I had to post!

That's disgusting, how could anyone do that do their body? In a couple years, he'll chop that arm off...

Isn't it copyright infringement, MS will sue him, and the Judge will have his arm confiscated...

DRM for tattoos!

If not your arm maybe on the back of your shoulder or lower back?
Can be covered easily but revealed easily when you wanna show it off. :)

Have you seen what a tattoo looks like on old skin?

To my mind it always emphasises the dichotomy of youth & old age in an ugly fashion.

Demonstrated by the growing lack of elasticity in our skin as we age.
