I also have been interested in this, also.

The MKDistro tool by Dreamlinux does seem like the best option to me.

The Dreamlinux devs have offered to help me build my own distro using the MKDistro tool, with all steps posted in the English language section of the forum.

last I looked I was looking for a reply back to my post, after I accepted their offer.

I would like to build a distro based on Ubuntu using Gnome with a Knoppix based hard drive detection.

Mepis is close to these specs but have based their release in KDE.

After trying Mepis I wasn't happy thus far with the sporadic stability, but I will continue to play with it.

I am very impressed with what has been coming out of Brazil:
1. Dreamlinux
2. Goblinux

babel? or other? hmm.. I don't usually think of those in a serious manner. Usually, I have fun babelizing things, but I suppose I could use it to get the gist of what was being said.

"gerenciador de janelas" and it stumps Babelfish and FreeDict. Anyone know what it means?

I think you forgot one, called dfsbuild, it's in the Debian and Ubuntu repositories already, and it's the one in which Debian uses to make ISOs.

Thought of trying it myself...dfsbuild is the Debian From Scratch project.

Mainly, I'm hitting phrases that actually require some kind of knowledge of Portugese, instead of Babelfish and an acceptable Portugese-English dictionary :). I've compiled a list of phrases I don't know how to translate, but I'll take another stab at them with worldlingo.

The online translators are okay for simple phrases, but these phrases seem to throw them a curveball.

It means "should be" from the verb "Ser" (to be).

Do not trust online translators, most suck big style. You'd be surprised at how well they can sometimes get the point of the sentence across, even if it uses totally improper grammar.

There's another Ubuntu customization program out; it's called Reconstructor. Get the gory details here (http://reconstructor.aperantis.com/). It's pretty easy to configure it; I'm running it right now, will report on how it goes. Heck, if it actually generates a usable ISO, I might even find a host for it!

Yes, reconstructor works quite well for what it does.

It only supports ubuntu for now (thats only gnome), but it may work in a limited way with xubuntu. I'm going to try to test that this week.

Aparently version 1.0 is on the way (it's still beta ATM), so people should try it out and let Evan know what you find/think.

I haven't had as much luck with UCK, but have seen a couple new tools in this thread. Thanks for compiling them guys.

There is a lot on the horizon for distromaking it seems :)
