Ubuntu ships with a few gnome themes.
so I would like to install some more.
via synaptic I installed a package with gnome themes, but I cannot find them
how do I install a new Gnome theme ?

click on computer→desktop preferences. there you will find a theme manager. in there, all your themes are stored and changed.
you can add more themes by downloading them at e.g. www.gnome-look.org. there you will get the tar.gz files for the themes. simply drag and drop them into the theme selector window and they get automatically installed.

I wonder why have I been doing it the hard way. Uncompressing each .gz files into ~/.themes :p

now I understand the theme manager better
including the theme-details
now every user can mix different themes with different theme details !

I might just be stupid, but this doesn't work on my computer. I'm using Dapper Drake, and every time I drag the tar-gz file into the "theme-utility" I get the message "The file format is invalid".
What to do? :-(

i think you have'nt downloaded the true file just download "icon themes" from http://www.gnome-look.org
