View Full Version : my adventure into the unknown

I will soon be starting my adventure in to the unknown that is Linux. Just ordered a brand new hard drive that I'll use as a secondary and install Ubuntu on to it and keep my Windows Xp installation on the primary.

I know I said I was going to do this a long time ago, but now the time has finally come, I'll let you all know in due course how I get on. :)

Before anyone steers you wrong, "vi" is pronounced "six". Trust me. Despite what everyone tells you to the contrary, it's all lies. Lies! LIES, I SAY! Only I impart the truth. In the battle of pronounciations, they've all overlooked the simplicity of the truth.

Oh, yeah, and, like, Linux is cool. You'll like it. Give it a few weeks if it seems odd and a bit frustrating, and post your questions away.

And remember- SIX!

So tell us what's happening & maybe somebody here can help...that's why it's often referred to as the Linux community!

Don't worry I'll be keeping you all posted, I'm still waiting for the new hard drive. Probably won't get it this weekend seeing as it is Easter Weekend in the UK. :)

Good luck. Be sure to mention the ubuntuguide on your site (and use it too) because without that many are lost.

We'll help you as much as we can here in the forums.

Hey! Glad you're jumping in the linux world :)

Just from personal experience, it really helps to force yourself to use linux over windows. I used windows so often because I it seemed really hard. It really isn't, it's just different. Bee prepared to use the command line

rm - delete
ls - get file contents
cp - copy
mv - move
cd - change directory

hehe, if you know those you can do a lot of things; they're life!! ;)

Good luck, but trust me, after some time you'll never want to boot windows again! All the things that are disadvantages at first will become big pro's (like the command line, really works a lot faster once you'll get used to it).

You just have to put through, wich is hard in the beginning, but pays of handsomely!! :D

Some facts you might want to double-check:

"Linux as mentioned before is supplied by ubuntu..."

what is the recommended file system to use? I have read throughout the forum about different file systems and want to make sure to use the most reliable system.

ext3.

Good luck with the install, persistence is the key with gnu/linux. Eventually you won't want to use anything else ;)

ext3 is by far the most reliable. I use XFS on my old iBook because it is faster. I've tried using ReiserFS, but it never goes well for me.....

vim can't be read like that:)
one thousand and four is written MIV.
roman number are always upper case.
but maybe vim is some kind of cabbala thingie, like 6 - 1000 or subtract 5 to one to 1000, who knows. 996?? or 669? or 666?
;-)
