Well the title explains it all pretty much.
My pc is a Pentium 3 1ghz 512mb pc133 RAM Radeon 9200 Dinosaur of a machine.
Im pretty new to GNU/Linux. It can get kind of frustraiting waiting 10 seconds for Firefox to start.
It is also quite ugly when moving windows around on the desktop. I have heard somewhere that disabling the Virtual workspaces or reducing the number of them can improve performance. I have done this; I reduced the number to 2. I use the 2nd workspace to store Rhythmbox and the Terminal.

I do no printing or bluetooth which are entries I see in BUM. Would disabling these speed my pc up any? If so, can you name any others that I may not need that I can disable?

Edit: Switching to Xubuntu or using Fluxbox is out of the question.

It's odd, I hear people talking about how much faster ubuntu is than windows, and I have a 3ghz machine and no matter what I do to it, I can't get any noticable speed boost. My little 1.5ghz celeron laptop seems faster.

Why, I don't know. There must be some unknown something I need to do, or maybe it's a hardware combo that is making things slow?

10 seconds lag? I run ubuntu on my 750mhz laptop with 256mb of ram and firefox loads in about 2/3 seconds. I cannot understand how your machine could be so slow.

But turning off bluetooth and printing could help you so try it. If you do ever need them it is easy enough to re-enable them.

Out of interest, why is xubuntu out of the question? Can you use only gnome?
