Can anyone explain this. Must be something simple. I am trying to do this from network connection at an university. Able to browse web and such fine.

vp@IBMT23:~$ sudo apt-get install gnome-ppp
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
E: Couldn't find package gnome-ppp


vp@IBMT23:~$ sudo apt-get install acroread
Reading package lists... Done

E: Couldn't find package acroread

I'm not sure about gnome-ppp, but acroread isn't in the regular repositories. Have you added / enabled universe, multiverse, backports etc?

You may also need to do an apt-get update.

It's in the Universe repo in the Networking section. As the previous reader suggested, if that repo is enabled, you should be fine.
