ok, I am feeling a bit down now  I cant realy see an end to software patents in Europe and I cant help but asking... from what country is Ubuntu from? its not from Europe is it?? I also have to ask... how much of the work does Linus Torvalds acctually make on linux today?

I cant help but see a tad of hope anyway though...

something else I cant help but ask is... is there Gnome for freeBSD? 'cos freeBSD is allredy licenced as UNIX and cant be over-run by some idiotic new law. Since I bet Microsoft has a hand in this, windows is definently not something I want to get back to!

Someone seel like putting two sperate teams together, one team of snipers and one of elite hackers, LETS INVADE BRUSSELS! 8-[

Pray for linux!! http://www.ubuntuforums.org/images/smilies/eusa_pray.gif

oh... and something else I cant help but wounder is... can you use software compiled under Linux in freeBSD?? and is it possible to use .deb/.rpm packages in UNIX??

linus does TONS of work on the kernel still. he is the head of active development on the latest and greatest kernel 2.6.X.

as far as where ubuntu is headquartered, they are headquartered in africa.

yes. gnome, kde, fluxbox, gaim, openoffice. they all run on freebsd. you might not even notice a desktop difference between the two, well beccause for the desktop there really isnt a difference. the underpinnings(kernel, directory layout, etc) are different though. sound libraries are different too.

yes, stay far away. with work, you can find alternatives to 100% of your computing needs in gnu/linux.

freebsd has a gnu/linux binary compatibility layer, so some things work. i have never tried it, i simply know that something exists.

Thought it was the Isle of Man, between England and Ireland....

As far as I can see from the various sites, including distrowatch it is based on the isle of mann.

However, most people that are worried can relax in knowing that the isle of mann is a tax haven and also does not come under the rule of the UK and therefore European legislation does not apply in this case :)

It's the Isle of Mann, though Mark Shuttleworth is FROM South Africa. That's where the confusion comes from.
