I've managed to get the UT2004 demo working (well... it was only a matter of executing the package :D) so I was wondering if the UT2004 community is a little bit alive, so that it's actually worth it buying the game for Linux.
By the way, I have to say it runs very smoothly! I guess I had bad expectations of Linux gaming ;)

UT2004 is an awesome game. Just playing Onslaught is totally worth it. All I had to do is install my nvidia drivers, the libstdc++5 package (sudo apt-get install libstdc++5), and my UT2004 DVD. I have tried it on the Dapper i386 and AMD64 installs and they both work great. You can also use the AMD64 binaries on the dapper AMD64 install (duh!) after you do the latest UT2004 patch.
Here is some good info about installing and updating UT2004 on linux:

and some UT2004 tweaks:

for obvious reasons the people on the demo version a re a lot fewer in number then the people who actually own the game. everyone you see on the demo versions is USING the demo, and people who own the full game cannot join demo servers, and vice versa
im pretty sure that this game is pretty popular as its the latest version in the unreal tournament series, and i hear its pretty cheap too... like 20 dollars or less.

Thanks for the supporting links! I think I'll be getting UT2K4 anytime soon, just to see it working on Linux :) I came across a light problem though: I wasn't able to browse for games over the internet ('Failed querying master server' or something). I am very 100% sure that I have an internet connection since I am also able to get on IRC through UT2K4, and view the news :D
Any ideas on this one? Because if I can't get an internet connection it's pretty useless for me to get the game anyways.

Never mind, I had to press 'refresh' like a dozen times, and I've played the onslaught map, which, I have to say, rocks :D

ok, I would never have guessed that UT2004 was Linux friendly. I'm really glad you posted AZzkikr, otherwise I probably would never have looked on the box.
Do I have to be on a platform specific server, or can I just connect to any of them.....ie....we play on a LAN internally because of our satellite latency....my husband is running windowsxp.....if he puts up the server on his box, can I still connect to it?
Forgive me if this is a stupid question, I just switched to Ubuntu this week and I'm still trying to gain my footing.....but UT will go a long way to making me happy!!!!
Thanks

As long as your both running the same patch version then it will be no problem for you to play togeather regardless of platform. Most servers you find on the net run on a linux client anyways. Even if the game itself won't run on linux.
I would also like to recommend to you Doom3 and Quake 4 which also have linux installers available and run perfectly without much tweaking (at least none that I've had to do.)
