hi,
well, i have indeed broken my Ubuntu Hoary preview system, finally!
did a dist-upgrade using both ubuntu and debian repositories, and now i cannot boot into ubuntu at all... no keyboard detected!
all the debian-based distros are, truly, NOT debian... they all break once u do a dist-upgrade!!
time to backup everything, and move to a new distro, perhaps...

You did notice in /etc/apt/sources.list Ubuntu clearly states it does not give a rat's behind what happens to your system if you use other repositories than their official ones right ? Just wanted to point that out  .
If you're leaving, try any Xandros and install gdm gnome and watch how sparks blow your system off . bonne chance

Well, you should know Ubuntu is NOT Debian, it's based around Debian, your first mistake was using the debian repositories. Second was using Hoary w/ Debian repositories.
This has nothing to do with dist-upgrade. I do it whenever need, works fine if you use what suggested by Ubuntu.

Hi,
I also screwed my first warty by doing the same as what you did, and I thought this was totally uncool...
But do as I did : give it another chance, and this time get rid of the debian repositories. Then everything works smoothly !
It would be a pity if you leave the Ubuntu community...

Hes basically trying to Upgrade a Preview Hoary with another Distribution with its own problems and hes whining that Ubuntu sucks and then telling us to not dist-upgrade? I do it everyday and nothing has happened .

But seriously

So it looks like he wanted to break it, wich is understandable as he basically broke all the rules possible. Why even use debian repositories, who told you they were 100% compatible. Ubuntu doesnt even acknowledge as 100% supported the Ubuntu universe/multiverse/backports and hes messing with debian?! and probably unstable branch ... pitty .

errrr, bro thats like saying cause mandrake came from redhat that you can upgrade from mandrake to redhat and vice versa.
the developers have said time and time again to not mix package repositories. so basically you mixed repositories and what was expected happened.
ubuntu comes from debian, but who said you could go from ubuntu to debian? i don't remember that a tagline of ubuntu.
i think the distro you are looking for is "fairyland gnu/linux." fairyland gnu/linux does EVERYTHING you want it to do. when you mess it up, fairyland gnu/linux knows exactly what you are trying to do and does it anyway, regardless of if it is bad. fairyland gnu/linux also implements AI technology to do what you really meant to do. no more deleting files you really needed or borking your system, fairyland gnu/linux can fix it, no questions asked. fairyland gnu/linux also comes with 100% patent free mp3, DiVX, real, DVD, VCD, Mpeg, Mpeg2 playback! because in the world of fairlyland gnu/linux there are no patents! fairyland gnu/linux install all the programs you want cause it knows what you wanted automagically. the developers of fairyland gnu/linux also implement EVERY change you want. you want reverse debian compatability, you got it, the fairyland gnu/linux developers are here for you. you want fairyland gnu/linux to run your crusty 5000 year old no name brand scanner or printer? NO PROBLEM, fairyland gnu/linux has a basement full of codemonkeys working 24 hours a day coding obscure drivers just for YOU! why wait now, install fairyland gnu/linux today!

rykel, slow down. I"ve borked several systems over the years. Just because I did, I did not jump ship. Cockpit error accounts for 99% of my failures. It's like I just can't help but shoot myself in the foot. If you leave, do so because you've found a distro you like better that this one. No other reason will do.
It's a well know fact - backed up by a mountain of hard evidence - that adding unapproved repositories is one of the leading causes of hair loss, pollution, unemployment and borked systems. Believe me, I've been there. At the moment I do not have anything but the 'Hoary' repositories. I learned first hand what a mess adding any and every repository I come accross can do to a system. I'm waiting for later to add other (safer) repositories. I have patience.
If its any comfort, I mess up my system when I upgrated to Hoary. Basically I had to reinstall. But for my money, you can't beat Ubuntu.
If you've left, come on back. If you haven't, glad you didn't.

Hi pals,
No flames or sarcasm pls!!
I apologise if my last idle comment abt Xandros stepped on the wrong toes... coz what I wanted to say was,
"Well, guys, I have screwed up my Ubuntu DELIBERATELY. So now, b4 I reinstall Ubuntu, I can go try out the slicky Xandros and any other distros (to screw them up as well  )... but I bet they will not be as good as Ubuntu"
btw, I purposely broke my Ubuntu coz I wanted to convince myself once and for all that Debian-based distros are NOT Debian, & tat includes Xandros, MEPIS etc... (coz I switched to MEPIS and Ubuntu initially thinking that I can simply dist-upgrade them to get a spanky, clean, configured Debian system)
So there, pls understand that of all the distros, Ubuntu is now, seriously, one of my fav... I just installed SUSE 9.2, and well... the feeling's just NOT the same... Ubuntu still feels better!
So I didn't "leave" the community, and I am still around to help any newbies, IF I am that good myself. LOL.
btw, the only thing about Ubuntu Hoary Preview now that is causing me a lot of frustration is this: that whichever program I install from the repositories does NOT get a menu entry in GNOME.
Please show me how I can "automate" this feature if you can!
How do you guys add programs? Do you have to manually create a launcher link to them after installation??
Best Regards,
Rykel

well it will break if you mix it up with something that isnt supposed to be there in the first place.
If you notice in synaptic, the legend icons tell you if the package is supported or not. If its supported, then the chance of that app to have a launcher (if its a desktop app) is quite high. If its not, good luck.

It is NOT AN ISSUE WITH UBUNTU! It is upto a particular program to create the menu entries. If you install any program that is supported by the window manager then they will do this for you.
Even MEPIS is not going to create menu entries for you for all the apps!

That should fix your menu problem since MEPIS creates a menu entry for every executable file on your disk. Or does it just seem like it? ;-)

Thanks for clarifying your post. I'm glad that you didn't leave us. I am a little disappointed and suprised by the reaction of other posters, though. I always refer people to Ubuntu because of the community and how unlike other distros, you don't get flamed here. I guess, that's not the case anymore. It's truly a shame, too, because the community was one of the big things that set Ubuntu apart. Hopefully, this reaction is just an isolated case.
As for the menu entries not showing up, I believe it is because gnome has changed to become compatible with the freedesktop (??). As such, menu entries are stored differently and if the applications in the repository haven't been updated to the new standard, yet, well, then they won't have a menu entry.
To further complicate it, Gnome 2.10 doesn't come with a menu editor. The good news, is that if you search the Ubuntu forums, somebody has posted a script that you can run to add menu entries. Someone else reported that if you install XFCE and use it's menu editor, it will create the menu entries for gnome, too (although I haven't tried this to verify if it works).
Hope that helps, and I'm glad you're not giving up on Ubuntu.

I think some frustration and confusion comes from the title of the thread. Dist-upgrage is a perfectly safe option!
Also if someone tried to do something not explicity told not to, then it wouldn't be so bad as they would have helped in discovering a bug. But, to do something that was unadvised should not have been expected to result in anything else but a broken system!

Oh ... hang on ... one of my slippers is green ... ](*,)
For the menu update thing try installing menu-xdg (from hoary main I think) and menu from hoary universe. Although you still won't catch everything it does seem to help quite a bit.
