I currently own Amd phenom 965 model with 4 cores and 3400mhz as default.
I am running kubuntu 13.04 64bit.

Would I notice a difference if I upgraded my cpu to 6 or cores?

Is Linux sharing cpu cores performance wisely?

If Kubuntu has system monitor you can see the usage.
My 4 cores are used pretty much the same on this PC

I would look to change the hard drive to SSD first, even if you just put the system on it and use the existing for storage, Desktop etc.
And of course add faster memory, about 4Gb is enough.

I am planning to upgrade my system with raptor hdd, not ssd. Raptor has almost double transfer speed compared to normal hdd. I am too scared to mess with ssd with thispoint. I am just curious if someone has experience about the impact of more cores.

My Mythtvbox has 6 cores, 8gb RAM and a 32Gb SSD for the system with 5Tb storage over 4 sata Drives.
It was a 4 core, moving to 6 made only a small increase, it was faster at transcoding and other CPU hungry operations
but the SSD and the extra 4Gb Ram made the best improvement.

The SSD has a read/write of 0.25ms many many times faster that my SATA's and their is the bottle neck, even worse over USB.
