View Full Version : Idea to really make EasyUbuntu more than just a way to get multimedia support

I love what EasyUbuntu does and though I prefer to do things the console way, many of my friends find comfort in a GUI.

Here is my "big idea" (tm) that I had to make EasyUbuntu even better. I reload my PC all the time, like unhealthily so, probably 2/3 weeks at most... why? because I get this inate urge to play with Mac OS X or Vista Beta's or play a Windows game... but everytime I reinstall Ubuntu I have to spend time tweaking my UI (like the godawful huge font for the menus/toolbars, and then I can shrink the bars at the top/bottom of screen).... BUT!!!!!!!

What if EasyUbuntu could keep track of those changes, like changing the gnome fonts or the default theme choosen or the icons that are put in the quick launch or even the default (Few) desktop backgrounds. It could even go so far as to incorporate installed packages (since it has access to the nonfree ones anyways) that could be reinstall upon reload.

That way, when I reload, I can install EasyUbuntu and then it could do one of two things (this would probably be decided during dev which path to take)... either you could restore all of this from a .euc (easyubuntu container) or it could download it from EasyUbuntu's servers...

That would really make the whole Ubuntu experience much nicer and also would give a reason besides multimedia capabilities to be integrated in the Edgy or Edgy+1 release(s)... Any thoughts

Basically, the thought is "Google Browser Sync for Firefox" meets Ubuntu.

You could also just backup your home folder where all your settings are stored (usually in folders prefixed with a "." so they're hidden) and spare the Easy Ubuntu programmers a lot of work.

:) Is that were all of that stuff is backed up too... I have no problem doing stuff manually as I said before but from a usability and user-friendliness, it would be a nice feature...

Hi mate,
Although its a Really Nice Idea, its not EasyUbuntus problem :)
EasyUbuntu /is/ to install those codecs, and the few other things it does, and lots of other things would be nice, but are esentialy irrelevent.
Its hoped for Edgy (but at latest Edgy+1) to have an easy backup tool /in/ Ubuntu, which will take care of your problem :)
