Hey all,
I loaded stellarium. It loads without a hitch, but the fonts are absolutely unreadable.
Any ideas welcome.

I have the same exact problem. Are you using XGL? Has anyone fixed this?
Is the latest version (0.8.1) available as a deb? Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is one of the few programs I still boot into windows to use.

Yes. I am using XGL. I also noticed the same problem is occuring with scorched3d. I didn't think that XGL would affect a font so much.
Also, the problem still occurs when I load without XGL.

yeah, I have the same issue with scorched3d aswell. Maybe this will get fixed in future versions of xgl. I wonder if it's just as bad with the recent version of stellarium.

p0ptart, are you sure this is an XGL problem?
If so, why are you so sure?
Just curious.

To be honest i'm certainly not 100 percent sure but I have also seen other posts where the poster said turning off XGL fixed the issue. I really like XGL and compiz and not just as eyecandy. I think they add to the computing experience and as goofy as it sounds... going back to a non 3-d enabled desktop seems very dull and lifeless now. I would really like to have my xgl and stellarium! :)

So yours works if you turn XGL off? I tried, and I still have a problem.

same situation here. my fonts in stellarium and chromium are completely unreadable, and i can't fix it by way of turning compiz off.

Ok. I have a fresh install of Ubuntu (no XGL) at home that I loaded Stellarium and Scorched3D on. They both work without a hitch, no font problems whatsoever!
So, I think this is at least one step closer to affirming our assumptions about XGL being the culprit of this annoying problem!

well, that's too bad, as xgl is more important to me than stellarium and scorched and chromium :(

Installing the latest version from source (0.8.1) sort of solves the problem. The fonts are fine, but if you change the landscape to something different, the fonts go wierd again. Bizare. Other than that bug though it seems pretty useable.
Someone must know what causes this though?

The new xgl from source I assume. Sort of a dumb question, but I just wanted to clarify.

i just sent a private message to poofyhairguy. I basically asked him for any help, ideas, or suggestions he might have. I'll post back if anything happens.
BTW, who controls the XGL source, is it novell?

In the process of analyzing the Gentoo Xgl how-to for an answer. No solutions so far, but I am still looking.

Ok. I have a solution. I have been seeking some answers in this forum
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=131267&highlight=xgl+install
And somone finally responded with a clear explanation
the reason Scorched3D and other games don't work with xgl is because they use opengl, and xgl/compiz prevent other apps from using opengl, so it uses software rendering. the way to avoid this is to do this:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=51486
as for the window decorations, they don't work because compiz is a window manager which replaces metacity (the default gnome one) and doesn't use metacity settings
So. I tried the instructions in the link mentioned in the quote. I had to change this line
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-common
to
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Just follow the how-to, and you should be fine.
The how-to uses the game enemy territory as an example. All you have to do is make an executable for whatever application is giving you worries.
The bonus to all of this is that you can switch to and from this xserver! So, you can have Xgl along with whatever you have going, and any app in the other xserver.
Pretty damn cool if you ask me!
I tested this with stellarium and scorched3d on Ubuntu Dapper.
I should also note that when switching back to Xgl, I have some performance problems. The cube doesn't rotate smoothly.
Any questions, I'm here.

That sounds like an interesting solution. I was actually succesful trying megadodo's suggestion of compiling stellarium 8.1 from source. I hit a wall going down the other path. Glad to have stellarium back. :)

Searching for Stellarium fonts work I found this "old" post and I think that:
I use XGL, and I have problem with the font of Stellarium 0.7.1 ... but, if I install stellarium from source, building it for myself (the latest version, 0.8.1), it works fine ...
Does it show that is no Xgl problem and it is a stellarium deb cumpilation problem?
I Think... :P

I Think... :P
In post #18 of this thread, I posted an explanation of the problem that makes sense.
the reason Scorched3D and other games don't work with xgl is because they use opengl, and xgl/compiz prevent other apps from using opengl, so it uses software rendering.
So, is it a compilation problem, or is it XGL preventing other programs from using opengl? If you base the answer on the solutions, it's both. I solved the problem by configuring these apps to open in their own x server. Other users in this post compiled stellarium from source, and that fixed the problem.
Then what's the answer? Whatever one best solves your problem :)
