I have a convoluted scheme to waste my time with and it involves building my own desktop environment or modifying an existing one. Would look it up myself but do not know where to start. I'd reckon learning a language foremost would be best, but I do not fully understand the architecture of desktop environments. I know of the different variants out there, KDE, Gnome, XFCE, Fluxbox, etc... But would like to understand how they tick. http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/5783/55201915.jpg

Will post a .jpeg of my overall goal to pose a question of my plan's viability.

Hi there!

Well the languages side of things isn't too difficult; GztK or QT.

Typically more are written in GTK, however learning QT also has the benefit that it's going to be used in the ubuntu mobile app creation, so there's a second reason to learn.

The starting point has to be seeing how far you can push the Config files of something "simple" such as flux/open box.

Kudos for setting your self such a goal. Learning one of those languages will also provide an excellent skill.
