Does the HP probook 4540s work properly with Ubuntu? I tried searching on the "supported laptops" sticky thread but I didn't find it there.
The model I'm considering has an ATI graphics card. (and a fingerprint reader, which I'm not interested in)

Usually the thing that makes ubuntu "not compatible" is graphics drivers, and network drivers. I'd say why not dive in! If something doesn't work post a new thread, and send me a message if you want my help on it.

I will be getting mine in a few days, and I plan to install Ubuntu 12.04LTS on it. I will post here if I find any issues, but in the meantime (a kinda noob question), I should install the 64 bit version right?

I have one, HP 4540s ProBook running Windows7, Debian AMD64 and Backtrack 5r3 AMD64 (Ubuntu).
Only problem I had was with the RaLink 3290 Wireless/Bluetooth module.
I was able to compile the RaLink 3290 module and get it running just to find out that it did not support monitor mode.
I replaced the RaLink 3290 with an Atheros module from another Laptop and everything is working perfectly.
Just had to disable Bluetooth since it was not there anymore.
