Would it be possible or practical to download the upgrade to 12.04 offered by download manager with Gwget or some other download software that would allow me to stop and resume the download? My connection too damn slow to get it all at once. Or, using the 12.04 installation disc from Canonical, could I get an upgrade that would keep everything that (hopefully) would be kept if I just clicked upgrade on the update manager?

You can download the Ubuntu 12.04 CD.
Kindly make sure that the new version is only different in version name and not the nit image.
i.e. if u r using 32-bit then it is safe to download 32-bit Ubuntu 12.04 .iso image.
Then create a USB boot pen drive using usb disk creator option.

Then restart computer / laptop and boot from pen drive.

At one screen u wil get 3 options:
1) Upgrade 10.04 to 12.04
2) Erase everything and install 12.04
3) Something else.

You can select 1st or 3rd options.
Choose 3rd options only if u r knowing where is ur /, swap and /home on ur disk. If you know that then u can reassign them. Do not tick mark format. This means it will not format those drives and retain ur earlier files as they r.

Thank you.

You should download the 12.04 Alternate CD, it contains all of the packages needed to do an upgrade.

Unfortunately, they don't seem to have the alternate install in 32 bit... hmmm.. http://releases.ubuntu.com/precise/

Of course they do:

Look carefully at the file called ubuntu-12.04.1-alternate-i386. It's better to download just the torrent file, and then use torrent especially with unstable connection. The torrent also checks for corruption during download.

When it finishes, you will have the 32bit Alternate ISO.

Sorry and thanks, I meant, the quoted site didn't have 32...
Perhaps I should research bittorrent; doubtful because my download speed can be as crappy as 15 - 30 K. Is there any reason a download manager like Gwget would be less accurate.. do these not check the download?
