View Full Version : [ubuntu] Desktop Environments

I've been trying a few different desktop environments - GNOME, KDE, & Unity. I'm uncertain if I'm doing this right, although I believe I'm on the right track.

At login (greeter?), I have the option of selecting GNOME (and all its incarnations), KDE, or Unity. If I have made up my mind about which desktop I prefer, what is the safest way of removing the other options?

Thanks in advance.

Myself, I would just reinstall.

Reinstall? Wow... Had I known, I wouldn't have bothered with the others. Heh. What about reinstall from LiveCD?

The safest way? Don't try to remove them. if you try, your system will likely end up broken.

Linux is about choice. Just select the system you want to run on any given day when you log in, as you've been doing.

I have Gnome, KDE, Cinamon, XFCE, LXDE and Blackbox on this machine...

There's really no need to reinstall the entire OS. The psychocats.net links will tell you how to remove unwanted *buntu-desktop packages.

Interesting point... I may just do that. I can certainly appreciate having a variety. Each one I've tried thus far seems to have one benefit or other over the others.

It looked a little... daunting. I'm still getting used to CLI and I guess I just wanted to be sure that I wasn't inadvertantly breaking something... or causing something to not function to its capacity.

Reinstalling is just my personal preference.

And its not that daunting of a task. Double click on the appropriate line of code so it gets highlighted and right click/copy. Then right click/paste to terminal and press enter. It will then ask for password. There will be no visual verification when you enter your password. And once again hit Enter.

It will take a while.

No worries. I absolutely 'get it'. In perusing the forums, it's very easy to see that there are a myriad of approaches to a problem and some simply have their own way, especially if they have considerable experience. I just need to develop mine as I become used to a new OS.

I may revisit the issue in the near future and tackle it then. This would certainly afford me a little time to better appreciate each environment.
I appreciate everyone's responsiveness. I shall now attempt to flag this [SOLVED] (if I can) because, frankly, it seems to be less the issue I originally believed.

Look in the Thread Tools drop down at the top right of the thread.
