Hi, I've noticed that a few people have animated avatars.

I thaught my avatar would look better if the iris smoothly changed to brown and back. With this in mind I spent a whole hour in GIMP to do just that (it was my first animation). I saved the file as an animated GIF and opened it in FireFox, it works and looks good.

My problem is that when trying to upload my new avatar, I'm told, "You may not upload animated images".

Has anyone else had this problem? Do I need to use a different file format?

Cheers,

Tony.

I thaught I'd remotly host the image & link it, instead of directly uploading. I think this my work (as i can show it here), but it's saying that the image is too large. I've shrinked it to 90x78 and optimized for GIF (removed repeated layers). The file is currently 59.9KB.
Is there a way to get the file size down, without reducing quality further?

This question really belongs in Forums Discussion so I'll move it there for you. I'll also give you a short answer to the question. Animated avatars were not always banned however due to a rash of offensive and/or way-to-colorful flashing and annoying avatars that swept through the forums about 7 or 8 months ago they were banned outright. The few members that had reasonable animated avatars at that time were allowed to keep them as a grandfather clause, but if/when they change their avatar they will not be able to replace it with another animated one.

BTW, I like what you have there. I'm sorry it can't be used.

Thanks, a least I can stop tying to reduce the file size now. Got it to 22.5KB, still too large - and looking pixelated.

You can make animated GIFs in GIMP?
