I fully support Matt Zimmerman's idea to move Ubuntu in this direction. Various 3rd party projects arose out of an unmet need in Ubuntu. Moving a number of these solutions directly in to Ubuntu would create a more satisfied user experience, especially for novice users. As long as Ubuntu stays Free, in both senses of the word, this is a good direction.

You can see my full response in the above-noted CommonCustomization thread here. (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1207912&postcount=31)

Orvils, the Lead Maintainer and Almighty One of UbuntuGuide.org also posted a response in that thread, which you'll find here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1208312&postcount=34).
