Is it worth it?

I have been trying to convert to ubuntu with little victory. I cant get my system to boot because my network card prevents ubuntu from booting, due to some driver issue or something ive tried my hardest to figure out:

I want to use ubuntu because i like the open source movement and many of the apps, plus its free. But it seems more hassle than its worth. GIMP is simply not as powerful as photoshop, and even AmaroK in my opinion can't hold a candle to itunes or Windows Media Player 11(its a beta right now but its awesome, the first WMP ive liked at all). Plus soon I plan on buying this:

Obviously the Mackie recording software will not work with linux, and that is the main draw of the product. Audacity is fine for simple, free, recording but it is noit very powerful. I seem to be stuck with dual booting to game, use photoshop, or soon recording. Sigh, just venting.....

I don't see the problem with dual booting myself. My issue with windows was viruses, spyware + running the software to keep them out.

So why not use windows for the above mentioned hardware/software and use ubuntu for the internet.

You get the best of both worlds :)

Rebooting into ubuntu just to use internet and gaim seems silly. I never got spyware or viruses before. I am careful about what i download and install, regularly scan with AGV and Adaware.

It's worth it for me, but for you--since GIMP and AmaroK don't suit your needs--I would say it isn't worth it.

Stay on Windows and use as much open source software for Windows as you can.

you can still use gaim, firefox, thunderbird, etc. in windows. there's lots of open source software for windows.

Oh yeah ive been using firefox for a couple years. I did like ubuntu when it was working though : /

Try another big-name distro. Sometimes, certain hardware just refuses to get along with certain distros. Next time try something non-Debian, like OpenSuse Slick, and see how that pans out.

Maybe you can also contribute to why you find itunes and wmp11 better and same ofcourse for photoshop ( very expensive piece of software that almost noone can buy). So the dev people of Amarok and Gimp can make it better and maybe pull you over to linux.

Driver problems are a problem and yes it sucks, maybe put a bounty on it and someone is willing to try to make a driver for linux.

I replied to your original thread suggesting apic or apci changes in order to boot.

As for the audio hardware you want to purchase, there is stuff that works with linux.
