My distro's of choice are Debian then Ubuntu.

I wonder if its because I selected .deb as my preferred choice for packages http://www.mustangmods.com/ims/u/154/1304/8698.gif

I tried Suse and it made me cry. Package management seemed horrific compared to Ubuntu.

PCLinuxOS was nice enough, and I liked the idea behind VideoLinux, which is based on it. Both were fun.

I always wanted to try Yoper, but never got around to it. Maybe you could give it a go for me? :)

I would check out Suse. Very slick! Both KDE and Gnome versions are cool. I wounder who will win Distro of the year. last year was neck and neck with Ubie and Suse. I wounder why Suse package made you cry? Novell has release their new desktop and server.

Please, avoid saying that a distribution sucks just because it doesn't work for you or you don't like it.

Evidently I'm right where I need to be, which is good because that's how I feel about it.

It suggested Ubuntu first and then OpenSUSE. I've liked SUSE in the past, but at some point they stopped natively supporting my screen resolution and nothing I could install or modify would make available the resolution I needed. It was awful. Couldn't get past that.

Ubuntu correctly profiled my machine and set everything up gorgeously. I don't like to install an OS and then have to fix things about it. I just want to add the sparkle and the candy. Ubuntu has always given me that.

What was your experience and what didn't you like?

Your the first person who I have known to not like the live CD of Dreamlinux.
(important to know it is only available as a live CD now)

oh! now I understand your problem with it.

If you do an install it will do a default install of Morphix(or something),...it is too new for install it is only available as a "live" CD now.

The Dreamlinux team is working on it now.

It does look promising.

I intentionally tried to *not* steer it towards a particular distro.

Ubuntu, then Gentoo, then Arch. The first two I switch between every other month or so. (whenever one ticks me off, I wack it and install the other) I'm going to have to look into archlinux. Perhaps it will last longer than a month or two without ticking me off. :)

I would try PCLOS for a KDE distro, everything works out of the box and his repos are kept pretty up to date. I have had it running for 2 years on my desktop with no downtime, very reliable.

Mandriva's a Red-Hat-based system, so it's a bit different from Ubuntu or Debian. I worked with Mandriva for about a year and was more or less happy with it. The only thing is, they're commercial now. While you can still obtain a free release, don't look for any proprietary driver support (like Nvidia graphics cards) or security updates unless you join the "Mandriva Club" to get those features, and that's a $130/yr price tag.

If you don't need special drivers or can compile them yourself, and you don't need their security updates, Mandriva's pretty cool. Personally, I'm sticking with Ubuntu. It works better on my machine, and the support community's awesome (and free).

Nice quiz. My top three:
http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/614/ubuntu8su.png, http://img324.imageshack.us/img324/8392/debian2yr.png and http://img324.imageshack.us/img324/985/fedora4uk.png

And by the way, if you want to go over from the Debian-side to the Red Hat-side, check out Fedora Core. Or if you want something identical to RHEL, try CentOS

Freespire looks kinda cool when it comes out, it will be a lot like Kububtu with CNR and proprietary drivers, codecs, etc.

I agree with those who said try PCLinuxOS; it's been running on my lappy about as long as 'buntu's been on the desktop, and honestly it'd be on the desktop too if not for an install issue I had that I couldn't figure out as a noob.

It really depends, how different do you want? What is your knowledge level with linux?
If you a lot and want something different go with Gentoo or Gobo. If you do not know to much and want something different, try Mandriva.
