ubuntu as driver for EW7317UG Edimax ?

I have just installed Ubuntu Dapper Drake - released in June 2006.
So far I have not been able to use the Networking tool to successfully configure my EDIMAX EW7317UG 802.11g Wireless USB Adapter.
System > Administration > Networking was useless.

Yet the adapter was recognised.
I am new to Linux, I only can get the adapter to work by setting the essid of the network and the wep key using iwconfig in a terminal.
