Cannot empty Evolution trash

I'm going crazy. I have nearly 3000 mails in my Evolution trash which are 'stuck' there. I've been trying various solutions for hours - deleting files with various extensions, deleting folders.db, renaming folders.db, removing Evolution completely and then restoring it from a backup... Nothing helps. The folder appears empty for a few moments, but the moment I do anything in Evolution, everything gets regenerated again and there I am back with my 3000 deleted mails again.
