So I plugged in my USB key and.... Presto, desktop icon!
Nope, no Gnome-volume-manager -- pure KDE action!

Wait, my gnome does that too... so did KDE just get it? Because it's cool to have that feature. :)

Is that standard now? I still don't get anything like that
Edit: I should say "didn't" get anything like that. I gave up on trying to like KDE, I just can't do it.

Look in the "media:/" folder, from Konqueror.
If you like that on your desktop, go to Configure Desktop (right-click desktop), and change the Device Icons tab.
NOTE: You need pmount (through APT) in order for the icons to mount the devices properly.
I don't like turning this into a GNOME-vs-KDE thread, but it was the whole uneditable menu thing that pushed me over the edge.

There are two ways you can get things done:
80% functional and 100% done, or 100% functional and 80% done...
Whichever theory you personally adhere to - is the system that will work the best for you. It's not a kde vs. gnome - it's a "what mode you personally operate in, and what mode do the DE developers operate in" type of issue.
In General:
If you operate your life with an "80% complete, but 100% on time" type of attitude, then Gnome will DRIVE YOU CRAZY.
If you operate your life with a "100% complete, but 80% on time" type of attitude, then KDE will MAKE YOU SICK.

Thee and me, brother...I downloaded, burned & installed the latest (at the time) Kubuntu release (a few days ago)...played with it awhile...then wiped my "scratch" drive for another day, another distro.
KDE is just...too...busy...

I am glad to see that KDE does this now.
Also, while I can't edit my Gnome menu (and have no need to), I can't keep my lunch in my belly while wading through KDE's millions of menus.

thought kde supported this awhile back. guess not. oh well, good for kde users!

Before, KDE only supported this IF you (or a hotplug script) created fstab entries after the stick was hotplugged. In other words, KDE 3.3 was detecting FSTAB entries, not actual devices.
Now, KDE detects FSTAB entries, and uses pmount to mount the devices (and pmount creates the temporary fstab entries)

Hi,
Is this a hardware issue ?
Ive had gnome and kde running in mandrake 9.2, 10.1, fedora core 3, Ubuntu warty, hoary and mepis 3.3 and in every one when I plug in my memory key or my digi camera via usb they mount automatically and show a icon on the desktop ?
Although Ubuntu couldnt veiw digi pics from my camera until they had been opened in Paintshop Pro 7 via wine and then re saved to strip the offending exif data, but all the others read them OK.

wow its like an apple mac in the 80s!!!
seriously though, this is a very good thing, very user friendly. i really like that you can see a disk in you hand and then you put it in and it goes onto your screen.
i bet windows longwait^H^H^H^Hhorn will do this

The Menu Editor button in Kde 3.4 doesn't work, however, right click on any application in the Kde Menu and select Edit item and you enter the world of KdeMenu Editor :?:

Well I downloaded a daily build of Kubuntu and tried it. It works just like in Gnome- perfect.
I really like the way KDE runs on my slow laptop. When I rebuild my sisters clamshell ibook, I'll use Kubuntu.

Its easier to install Kubuntu. apt-get remove girlfriend misses some BIG dependancies and screws up some shared files.....

My Kubuntu preview release doesn't do this :(
I get the error that /dev/scd1 wasn't found in the /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab files. Am I missing something? I just downloaded the iso last night, did a pretty normal install, even apt-get update / upgrade. It detects the usb drive just fine (dmesg shows some love) but it cannot mount the drive.
(I posted for help in the desktop / kubuntu forums, I didn't think to look here first, hehe)
Thanks!

On my Dell laptop Gnome picks up my usb keys and shows the icon, however KDE reports the sda-1 folder cannot be found. However when you check the media folder a folder with the name of the usb key (ie Muvo or Kingston) is in the folder. How do I correct KDE?

Until i try to change the resolution of my paper printouts, or shedule the plotter to when se are at sleep because i can't even hear myself on the phone, or shen i need somthing else.
The thing is, i can do it in Fluxbox, in XFCE in Enlightenment in KDE, but i can't do that in gnome, hall i can't even program my mouse properly in Gnome.
I can use the shortcuts scheme to assign for absolutely nada on my MM desktop keyboard unless i pick a supported language, i can do that in all other wm's.
The point is, no matter what desktop you use, with 47600+ fetures removed Gnome isn't going anywhere but simple. It's to simplify the print dialog, that's why i can't ever print in full resolution in gnome or at the plotter, i can't shedule that in gome.
Why you ask? Because having those options would confuse gnome users.

Mega-bump! :)
Kubuntu 5.10 had a few last-minute problems with HAL integration when it was first released; getting all of the available updates and restarting KDE should fix it (or at least, it did for me).

Kubuntu-breezy has far more glitchest han ubuntu-dapper, for one reason, no developer i seriously interested in what you want, you'll use what they tell you and you won't complain.
I persoanally track kubuntu dev but i wouldn never use it for anything, i mean, Slackware is the most secure linux distro to date, it's got KDE, if i want that, why would i go with another distros second "non working" choice?
You think it is a coincidence that ALL the next BSD's will be delivered with KDE and that Sun is switching its java desktop over to KDE? You think Patrick V, the creator of the first distro dropped it because of anything than that it isn't really worthwhile anymore?
Gnome developers made their mistakes, i'm sure some will still use it, nostalgia never dies.

Cool, I didn't know that Slack has state-of-the-art SELinux and proactive security. Nice to hear.

Let me ask you, how many linux distros set up SELinux oob? i mean since that is your comparison you must know of distros that do, the truth is, of course, there is not even ONE.
Proactive security as in what, Slackware is a whitelist install, now tell me how may distros or even systems other than OpenBSD an Slackware are whitelist installs?
Now give me an in depth descritption of how a whitelist setup benefits from SELinux.

For your main desktop? I'd wait a bit, if you don't mind everythink being a tad flaky (like kaffeine crashing every now and then and don't do your user config in that environment, i have a user named roo and one named ro now and they can't be deleted.

This thread is about automounting in KDE 3.4, we shouldn't discuss Slackware's security or how good/bad SELinux is configured in different distros in this thread. Sorry, I shouldn't have been posting here at all - my error.
