I have an old Sandisk Cruzer USB 16GB stick with some files I need to transfer. When I plugged it into the USB port, my laptop froze and I ended up having to disconnect and reconnect the battery to get it working again. I've never had this problem before - any ideas?

There is a better way to do this.

hold down alt+SysRq and type reisub

The SysRq key is at the top right, and might also be called "print" or "screen print".

As far as the USB stick goes, that does sound strange. Is there any possible reason that it might be corrupted? How old is it? Was it previously used with Linux systems, or with Windows, or what? Has it been exposed to high magnetic fields / excessive heat/ accidently been through the washing machine?
