Thanks! This is the only way I got java to work on my 64 bit system. :-( Hopefully a true 64 bit implementation will be out soon. How come I can't officially thank you for this post? Does that feature only work on newer posts?

Hi and thanks for this guide. Since you updated it only 10 days ago, I tried using your Hardy script to install 32-bit firefox on my systemso that I could use Java (since Sun doesn't yet fully support 64-bit systems for applets or webstart), but Gdebi gives me an unresolvable dependency error message for this file:

ia32-lib-firefox

Any clues on where I could find it? It's no longer in any repositories, not even backports.

Cheers,

Z.

Never mind...

This link http://home.comcast.net/~ubuntu64user/ia32-lib-firefox-amd64.deb (http://home.comcast.net/%7Eubuntu64user/ia32-lib-firefox-amd64.deb)

solved my dependency problems.

Wow this finally solved the issue where Facebook's pictures uploader wouldn't work with IcedTea java.

Worked perfectly in Hardy x64.

I have a problem with accessing SSL VPN java applets for my work. I turned logging and trac on in my Java (32-bit) Control panel. I think the key message from a trace file which is prohibiting me from going forward is:

security: Accessing keys and certificate in Mozilla user profile: null
security: JSS is not configured

I get the same behavior under firefox32 (2.0 and 3.0), Swiftweazel (current default) and IceCat (I tried em all!)

This is my setup:
Dell XPS M1330 Intel Duo-Core 64-bti with Hardy 8.04 (all updates - little customization except this beautiful script provided on this topic.

I got this message when installing Swiftweasel32 on an Intel Processor (E6850 Duo) in Gusty 7.10:

The install script command that seems to be the problem is:
sudo dpkg -i /tmp/ff32/gsfonts-x11_0.20build1_all.deb

Swiftweasel32 works fine, the fonts look different than firefox32.
I am not sure how to fix this (simply creating the /usr/lib/X11/fonts and /usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1 directory does not help).

Actually, I don't think the above message is an indication of anything wrong. I turned on logging on a working 32-bit ubuntu 8.04 desktop and I get the same message, yet authentication occurs later on. Since I started off by installing 64-bit Sun java 6, I'm wondering if I have some 64-bit remnants lying around. How can I be sure ALL my java elements are 32-bit? Specifically, if I go into synaptic, and search "java" what are the minimum set of packages I should see?

The packages should be
ia32-sun-java6-bin
lib32nss-mdns

But I also have these installed.
sun-java6-jre
sun-java6-bin

It looks like these is a problem when installing the package. It is a package directly from the Ubuntu repositories. (http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/gsfonts-x11) The version is for Gutsy. You may want to file a bug report on launchpad if there is an error installing it.

This works great, but for some reason, lots of buttons aren't showing up correctly:

I observed the same thing with firefox32. I was then using Swiftweasel as all the button graphics were correct + it seemed a bit snappier. At some point, I tried Icecat just to experiment. Some time after that, firefox32 buttons are now just fine - icecat and ff32 (3.0) have an identical look and feel as far as I can tell.

Using the latest script (2Jul08 ff32_3in1_6293.tar.gz) on Ubuntu 7.10 Intel 64 bits with Firefox 2 and Firefox 3 I am unable to have mplayer work. For all the formats that it supports (say mpeg) I see the buffering load phase happen as expected and than nothing is displayed. I have tried a number of re installations etc... and I am not sure what to try/test next. The browser often just hangs.

sudo wget -c http://mirrors.kesudo wget -c http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/multiverse/m/mplayerplug-in/mozilla-mplayer_3.31-1_i386.deb return a "404" not found ... but I was able to get this .deb from some other places (like http://download.thaigrid.or.th/pub/ubuntu/archives/pool/multiverse/m/mplayerplug-in/)

Swiftweasel did the trick, thanks. :)

I'm having this same no icons problem with Firefox 3.0 32bit. What did you do with Swiftweasel to get the icons back into Firefox 3.0 32bit? My icons are all fine for Firefox 3.0 64bit.

Also, quick thanks to the tutorial author. I really needed Java support so that I could access my Uni's online discussion space and this sorted it for me.

I am still unable to use mplayer: I have a mplayer box displayed, but nothing plays.

For example if I select mpeg at this test page:
http://fredrik.hubbe.net/plugger/test.html, I shows buffering 83% and then stopped without displaying any video.

Note that this returns "404 not found":
wget -c http://mirrors.kesudo wget -c http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/poo....31-1_i386.de http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/multiverse/m/mplayerplug-in/mozilla-mplayer_3.31-1_i386.deb returns a "404" not found .

But I got the deb from http://download.thaigrid.or.th/pub/u...playerplug-in/

I am really not sure what to try next

jacques@sky:~$ locate mplayer | grep bin
/usr/bin/vmplayer
/usr/bin/gmplayer
/usr/bin/mplayer64

Note that substituting this string:
mozilla-mplayer_3.31-1_i386.deb
by this string
mozilla-mplayer_3.50-1ubuntu3_i386.deb
(suggested in this thread somewhere) did not help.

If I type about : plugins in the Firefox address bar, I get a long list (bellow)
It looks like Firefox is looking at version 3.50 (not 3.31), I am not sure why or if this could be the problem.

What can I try next?

Assuming you are running the default gnome desktop: right-click on Application (upper left) and select "Edit Menus". Then select Internet / Firefox32 3.0 Web Browser. Right-click and select "Properties". You will then get a chance to add the icon just as you did for your panel.

Thanks, automated scripts works fine in Hardy 64.
There's only a little issue in the script: mozilla-mplayer_3.50-1ubuntu3_i386.deb is no more available on Ubuntu repository. I've changed every occurrence in mozilla-mplayer_3.55-1ubuntu1_i386.deb.
Videos are ok.
Another issue is that is impossible to localize Firefox using an official xpi language pack (http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.0/linux-i686/xpi/it.xpi), at least for Italian.

Another issue is that is impossible to localize Firefox using an official xpi language pack (http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.0/linux-i686/xpi/it.xpi), at least for Italian.

I think you changed too much in package url. Your url:
mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/multiverse/m/mozilla-mplayer_3.55-1ubuntu1_i386.deb
but file is located in
mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/multiverse/m/mplayerplug-in/mozilla-mplayer_3.55-1ubuntu1_i386.deb

I ran the script to install Firefox 3.0 32-bit on Gutsy. It works and so does Flash Player. THANK YOU!!

I have two issues:

1. I got part-way through the installation of Java and it timed out because my internet connection went down temporarily. How can I recover from that?

2. On my machine I have two accounts - an admin and a non-admin account. I want to have common bookmarks between Firefox 32-bit and 64-bit. It works under the admin account but Firefox 3.0 32-bit does not pick up the bookmarks in the non-admin account's /home/.mozilla/firefox folder. I tried "wide-open" permissions on that folder and the files in it but that didn't work. I also gave the non-admin account admin permissions temporarily but to no avail. I cannot locate where the 32-bit Firefox is storing user data for the non-admin account.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Note that substituting this string:
mozilla-mplayer_3.31-1_i386.deb
by this string
mozilla-mplayer_3.50-1ubuntu3_i386.deb
(suggested in this thread somewhere) did not help.
I think above substitution should work only for Hardy.
Try changing mozilla-mplayer_3.31-1_i386.deb in mozilla-mplayer_3.31+main-1ubuntu1_i386.deb and run the script again.
Test url you've posted above works for me.

What site are you trying to access? You see, the howto uses the 32bit java found in the repo's. I don't have a lot of knowledge about getting specific applets to run. Some may not. But that doesn't mean that java isn't installed. Does this game run? (http://javaboutique.internet.com/aster/)
Any resolution on this? I also get the almost identical error log which starts with RSA premaster secret error. Are there extra 32-bit pieces required? This is for connection to secure applets where I work. Multiple applets generate the same error message and do not work. They work fine on 32-bit ubuntu 8.04. Note also that the link for Does this game run? works just fine for me. I'm running swiftweasel32 on my 64-bit ubuntu 8.04 and get the exact same errors using FF3-32 and Icecat.

:(

Sorry, I had a bad experience with this script.

On a fresh Hardy install it breaks apt. It fails to download several files from *anywhere*.

The installed browser (swift) misses all plugins which I selected.

And additionally synaptic reports dependency errors now.

I don´t go futher now and reinstall the whole thing. easy 30 mins......

I respect your work but this is my experience and perhaps, now some others dont run in such troubles.

Cheers,
Jens

Hi Kilz,

I have run into a problem while installing your script. I installed it and didn't notice any errors although I may have missed them. After installation I noticed flash wouldn't work. In my previous experiences with your script(Dapper,Feisty,Gutsy, and Hardy) I would run your script again with the browser closed and all would be fixed. This time no such luck. This is the error message I received while running the script again with browser closed. Any help is appreciated.

This is because you have upgraded Firefox by some method. The only correct way to upgrade the Firefox32 application is with debs from the front page of this howto. They are still at 3.0, your install is at 3.0.1.

Connection issues
Since the 3.0 beta and Firefox32 share a settings folder. Those that install the 32bit Firefox32 bay have to disable ivp6. This is not an issue with the Swiftweasel packages.
In the address bar type
Code:

In the filter type ipv6, right click on the line that says network.dns.disableIPv6 and select togle.
Restart the Firefox browser.

1. Download the product

You can download the latest version of Firefox for free from here:

http://www.mozilla.org/products/Firefox/

The current version is V2.0 and the Windows installation file is 5.6MB

2. Uninstall any old versions

If you have any previous versions of Firefox, then uninstall them before you install the new version. Don't worry about losing your settings and extensions, they will be saved and transferred to the new version. Technically there is no need need to uninstall older versions as Firefox 2 will write over old versions and retain your settings. However based on feedback from my subscribers there appears to be fewer problems if you uninstall first.

There is no need to uninstall Internet Explorer. In fact, it's surprisingly difficult to do so as it is so closely integrated into the Windows operating system. Just don't do it. Besides you may need it to view some non standards compliant web sites.

3. Install Firefox

Locate the file you downloaded in step 1. It should be called Firefox Setup 2.0.exe or something very similar. Double click on the file to start installation.

Once the install is under way agree to the license and accept the suggested default options.

At one stage in the Firefox installation you will be asked whether you want to make Firefox your default browser. I suggest you initially answer "no." That way you can test out Firefox without altering any of your current Windows settings.

If at a later date you want to make Firefox your default browser you can do so by selecting this option from within Firefox.

After installation, the Firefox Import Setting Wizard will run asking whether you want to import your favorites, internet options, cookies, saved passwords and a variety of other data settings from Internet Explorer. Answer "yes" to all- having all this information within Firefox makes for a much smoother transition.

4. Install Firefox Extensions

The standard version of Firefox is rather plain vanilla. Sure it has tabbed browsing and an in-built popup and phishing filter but this is only the starting point. To really see what Firefox can do you need to install extensions to add extra functionality to the product.

There are more than 1000 free extensions available. You can find many of them at the link below and even more by doing a Google search on "Firefox extension" or "Firefox add-ons."

http://update.mozilla.org/extensions/

Don't go mad and install scores of extensions. Just install those you'll definitely find useful. Listed below are the ones I consider most useful to average users. I've installed all of these on my PC and find each to be a little gem. Together they make Firefox V2 work just the way I like.

But it's different strokes for different folks so don't limit yourself to my choices. By all means use this selection as a guide but definitely try some others. Hey installation and un-installation is simple and the extensions are all free, so experiment to find out what works best for you.

AdBlock Filters ads from web pages. Very effective.

Tab Mix Plus Much more control over how tabs work

SessionSaver Saves tab sessions on demand and optionally when Firefox closes.

FlashGot Integrates FlashGet, GetRight and dozens of other download accelerators into Firefox

Fasterfox Tweaks Firefox to run faster on broadband connections.

Google Tool Bar The original Google Tool Bar now available for Firefox

Add Bookmark Here Easy way to quickly bookmark a site to any folder.

IEView Lite Opens the current web page in Internet Explorer

Mimimize to Tray Useful for keeping Firefox open but hidden. Use trunk version at bottom of page.

Sage A lightweight RSS and Atom reader,

You can get most of these directly from http://update.mozilla.org/extensions or just click on the links above.

To install an extension is as simple as clicking the "Install" link that you'll find alongside the extension description. Remember that an extension is not fully installed until you re-start Firefox. Once it is installed you can access any setup options for the extension by selecting Tools/Extensions from within Firefox and right clicking the extension.

You may run into problems if you try to install an extension from anything but the official Mozilla site. That's because the security measures built into Firefox don't allow just any site to install programs on your computer. A good thing I think you'll agree.

If you try to install an extension from an unknown page, Firefox will flash up a pale yellow bar at the top of the page saying that Firefox prevented the software from installing. To authorize installation, click on the "Edit Options" tab at the right hand side of the yellow bar, then click "Allow" to authorize the site and then click "Close". Once that is completed, try installing the extension again. This time it should work fine.

Another little problem you may encounter is that some extension sites don't offer an "install" option but instead offer a download link. In these cases download the file to your PC. Then, from within Firefox, select File/Open file and load the installation file you downloaded. This will install the file. Note that Firefox extension installation files have a file type of .xpi.

5. Install Themes (optional step)

In addition to downloadable extensions, Firefox offers many free downloadable themes. To get access to new themes select Tools/Themes from within Firefox and then click on "get more themes."

Now I'm not a themes kind of person so I don't want to comment too much. However with an earlier version of Firefox I did try a few themes to see if they reduced the width of the Google search bar which in that version of Firefox seems too wide for my eyes when using the default theme.

To be honest I found that on balance, I preferred the very clean looking default theme to any of the popular themes I tried. But themes are very much a personal thing so don't rely on my judgment.

6. Install Plug-ins

You probably had a number of plug-ins such as the Adobe Reader installed in Internet Explorer. Most of these are available for Firefox. Here's a list of links to some of the most popular:

Adobe Acrobat Reader

Apple QuickTime

Macromedia Flash Player

Real Networks RealPlayer

Sun Java Plug-in

Windows Media Player

To install a plug-in you want click the link and follow the vendor's instructions.

For more plug-ins see http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/windows.html

7. Configure Firefox to Work the Way You Like

The Firefox toolbars settings are user configurable. To do this use the View/Toolbars/Customize option to drop and drag icons to and from the toolbars.

I added a new tab icon, a history icon and a print icon to the Navigation toolbar and at the same time removed a couple I didn't need such as the default search bar as I use the GoogleBar instead. Here's how my version of Firefox looks.

Firefox uses pretty much the same keyboard shortcuts as Internet Explorer so you won't have to re-learn those you already know. You can see the full list here: http://texturizer.net/Firefox/keyboard.html

For the most part Firefox works pretty much like Internet Explorer however if you want to make it even more like IE then you should check out this web site.

http://www.Firefoxie.net
8. Configure Tabbed Browsing

Once you start using tabbed browsing you'll wonder how you ever did without it. However the are many ways to set up tabbed browsing and you'll need to experiment to find what works best for you.

That's why I recommend everyone should install the Tab Mix Plus extension. It offers you far greater control on the way tabs work than the standard options from within Firefox itself.

Personally I set up Firefox clicked links open in new tabs, not new windows. I also like to have links clicked from within other programs (such as my email client) open in new tabs without gaining focus. Finally I set up Tab Mix Options so that double clicking a tab closes that tab while double clicking the tab bar closes all tabs on the bar. Below you'll find screen shots that show my Tab Mix settings: But as I said, this is a personal thing so experiment

Links tab Events tab Display tab Mouse Tab Menu tab Session tab

If you set up Tab Mix the same way I have, you'll get a little side benefit. When reading newsletters I can click on several links and continue reading without Firefox taking the foreground on my screen. I can then click on Firefox and all my clicks will be lined up in individual tabs waiting for me to read. Note: To make this happen ensure you have first minimized Firefox with the "Minimize to Tray" extension.

9. Set up RoboForm (optional)
If you use RoboForm to manage your passwords in Internet Explorer you'll be glad to here you can use it for Firefox as well but you'll have to install the RoboForm Mozilla adaptor first. You can get the adaptor from here: http://www.roboform.net/dist/AiRoboForm-Netscape-Adapter.exe

Install the adaptor after you have installed Firefox but don't leave Firefox running when you do the installation - close all Firefox windows first.

Any passwords you stored in Internet Explorer using RoboForm will now be available to you from within Firefox.

10. Enjoy! (not optional)

Problem Solving

If you run into problems the first place to head is the Firefox FAQ. If you can't resolve your problem there then go to the Firefox forums.

I've only encountered a couple of minor problems. Listed below are some fixes but I should warn they are only relevant to experienced users. Beginners and average users should stop reading here.

Problem 1: I encountered this when I set Firefox to be my default browser. After that every time clicked a link from within Outlook I found that two identical browser windows opened rather than one.

It turns out this is a known bug and in fact is not restricted to Outlook - any application that opens a browser window may have the same problem.

Again I have been told that the problem has now been resolved. I can't say, but if you encounter it, here's the solution I found in one of the Firefox forums.

1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Select Tools and then Folder Options
3. Select the File Types tab
4. Select Extension: (NONE), File Type: HyperText Transfer Protocol
5. Click Advanced toward the bottom of the window
6. In the Edit File Type window, select open and click Edit
7. Clear the DDE message box (which should contain "%1")
8. Click OK, Click OK
9. Repeat for File Type: HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy

Problem 2: A couple of times I've experienced problems with Firefox not starting after I've installed a new version. The most reliable method of solving this is to uninstall Firefox, delete your Firefox profile folder and re-install. You'll lose also your customized setting and extensions but them's the breaks.

The Profile folder is stored in different locations in different Version of Windows. To find the location for your Windows version, click the link below.
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder#Where_is_my_profile_folder.3F

Problem 3: I've encountered this one each time a new version of Firefox has been released. What happens is that some of my installed extensions won't work with the new version.

Of course waiting for an update to the extension is the easiest option but sometimes that can be slow coming particularly if the developer gets caught up in some other project. However there are a couple of workarounds you might like to try.

The fact that an extension doesn't run under a new version of Firefox doesn't mean it won't work rather it means it has yet to be certified to work. That's a big difference. Many in fact will work. All you have to do is fool Firefox in to thinking they are kosher.

You can do this by using the free "Nightly Tester Tools" extension which allows you to re-install your old extensions by bypassing compatibility testing. It adds a check box to the Firefox install dialog box. When checked, the extension will be installed regardless.
http://users.blueprintit.co.uk/~dave/web/firefox/buildid/nightly.html

Mostly you will find that your extensions now work fine. If not just disenable them.

That's it for now. Enjoy!

Not really ... not that I've found anyways. They say it's optimized, but I've never found it any faster ... The only thing I've found is that some add-ons don't seem to work in swiftweasel.

Couple of issues with the 3in1 script I came across when installing Swiftweasel 3:

Flash - there's no .xpt files in the .tar.gz file downloaded:
cp: cannot stat `/tmp/ff32/install_flash_player_9_linux/flashplayer.xpt': No such file or directory

The directory created in /usr/local is /usr/local/swiftweasel32-3/ so had to manually chown that:
chown: cannot access `/usr/local/swiftweasel32': No such file or directory

Otherwise all seems to work well apart from the Applications tab seems to have no content types listed?

For Icon not showing up after FF32 install, I allready posted a fix for that back in june....

I solved my problem

I edited the file /usr/local/bin/firefox32-3

I changed the line:

linux32 /usr/local/firefox32-3/firefox $@

to:

/usr/local/firefox32-3/firefox $@

Now everything work fine with all icon, I don't know why but it work...

I had some troubles with c cedilla (like Ç, instead Ć). In Brazil we type ' + c (acute plus c) to do ć. But when running Firefox32 with Kubuntu 64 bits, GTK fails to load the 32 bit cedilla IM module. GTK always load the 64 bit module version.
I workaround it changing the internal references to the string "cedilla" from the im-cedilla.so 32 bit version to "cedil32" and setting the environment variable GTK_IM_MODULE to cedil32 (only to Firefox32 - I change its script). Also I include the im-cedil32.so into the 64 bit GTK IM module configuration file:
/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/immodule-files.d/libgtk2.0-0.immodules
I include the following two lines:
"/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/immodules/im-cedil32.so"
"cedil32" "Cedil32" "gtk20" "/usr/share/locale" "az:ca:co:fr:gv:oc:pt:sq:tr:wa:en:us"

Now after many search and trying, I can type '+c to get ć

Am I the only one having this issue? Installed firefox32 on AMD 64 Hardy refresh, per instructions. Browser and all plugins work fine. However, no matter _what_ I've tried 'mailto' links refuse to bring up thunderbird.

This worked just fine on Gutsy using a 64-bit native t-bird and 32-bit firefox browser. I tried a number of things suggested on various web fora (prefs.js, mods to rdf files in the install directory, adding things to about:config). Nothing works.

I'd like to just go back to firefox2 on hardy, but unless its an oversight the sticky install instructions do not indicate the availability of a firefox2 32-bit package for hardy 64.

Any advice that will take me in either direction is appreciated.

Hi,

thanks for the script. I've used it before to install Firefox 2 in Gutsy before.

Now, I've owned a new machine and installed Hardy. Almost everything OK with the script, only two problems so far:

1. Adobe reader wouldn't load in browser. Solution:

sudo cp /opt/Adobe/Reader8/Browser/intellinux/nppdf.so /usr/lib32/firefox32/plugins/
sudo cp /opt/Adobe/Reader8/Browser/intellinux/nppdf.so /usr/lib/firefox/plugins
sudo cp /opt/Adobe/Reader8/Browser/intellinux/nppdf.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

2. Most icons are missing. Tried to add through View/Toolbars/Customize but these are missing too. Any ideas?

Tnx for the script - for Hardy 8.04 worked perfectly (with Flash and Java). The only issue I've got so far - theme icons dissapeared (like no back, forward, home buttons). But I fixed it by installing another theme from the FF website. And when it's asked to restart FF - after starting and loading pages for 1 sec - FF crashes. But if you quit it and restart again - everything is fine.
Therefore, Thanks once again!

I found a solution to the fonts/Type1 problem (see bellow for full description) when installing Firefox32 or Swiftweasel32 with the 3in1 script (Processor: Intel 64, OS: Ubuntu Gusty 7.10, script 32_3in1_6294.tar.gz and the previous versions).

The solution is to update xfonts-util by hand to a later version than what Synaptic Package Manager recommends:

sudo wget http://ftp.netspace.net.au/pub/debian/pool/main/x/xfonts-utils/xfonts-utils_1.0.1-2_amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i xfonts-utils_1.0.1-2_amd64.deb

# Now the following lines (from the 3in1 script) work fine:
sudo wget -c http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/g/gsfonts-x11/gsfonts-x11_0.20build1_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i /tmp/ff32/gsfonts-x11_0.20ubuntu1_all.deb

I am not sure if this helps anything or if this is recommended... but it does fix the script warnings! Maybe this could be included in the script?

I got this message when installing Swiftweasel32 on an Intel Processor (E6850 Duo) in Gusty 7.10:

(Reading database ... 143615 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace gsfonts-x11 0.20build1 (using .../gsfonts-x11_0.20build1_all.deb) ...

The install script command that seems to be the problem is:
sudo dpkg -i /tmp/ff32/gsfonts-x11_0.20build1_all.deb

Kilz, thanks a lot for the script; it just saved me a lot of time.

As I've poverlooked your statement that the 'linux32' prefix has to be deleted I played around a bit myself first.

In the process I noticed that the file /etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders.32 mentioned in the starter script is missing.

Some googling shows that it can be generated with

sudo bash -c 'GTK_PATH=/usr/lib32/gtk-2.0 /usr/lib32/libgtk2.0-0/gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders /usr/lib32/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/* >/etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders.32'

However, this is unnecessary as deleting the line
export GDK_PIXBUF_MODULE_FILE=/etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders.32
does not break anything.

Hi thanks for the wonderful script just shifted from Windows to Ubuntu and was finding everything not working on my browser. Makes it a relief that people like you are there. I ran the script and everything worked fine. However now I notice that all the icons on both 64 bit as wll as 32 bit are missing the back, refresh, forward buttons are missing all I get now is something similar to an unavailable image icon instead of the buttons. Even the program icon are missing for the 32 bit I tried running the 32 bit install once again but still the problem has not been fixed. Can you tell me how to fix the same. Thanks in advance.

Are you using a icon theme other than the default one in Ubuntu?

I am using the default theme. Immediately after the 32 bit install I noticed the same. Now the icons on the 64 bit seems to work. But now when I accidently loaded the 64 bit and loaded this forum page it did not display properly. I closed that and the page loads fine on 32bit but the navigation controls are missing. Should I reinstall the browser. How do I first remove it and then reinstall with the deb file?

Hello,

I have downloaded the script and installed it.
It runs out of the box except the old version of firefox is also still available in my awn manager.
I have tuned up my desktop with mac4lin and the new one is not the same and has no buttons like (go back on page, forward) and stuff like in the old version.
Can you tell me how to and get this thing running like the old one.
I also would like to put the start up icon on my panel in awnmanager but that is not working either

I have instaled the firefox32 (firefox32-3). Whenever I execute this, it tries to load the shared library svg_loader.so.
I do not know why but it try to load the 64 bits shared library (/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/svg_loader.so) instead the 32bits (/usr/lib32/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/svg_loader.so) causing a lot of wrong ELF class errors.

Are you sure you're using 64 bit then? There is no such thing as a 64-bit Java web plugin, so I'd like to know how exactly you're able to run Java.

I've never been able to get Java applets to load from HTTPS sites, even with the 32 bit Java on 64 bit OS.

Yes, Java, or the need for a Sun Java plugin is one of the last reasons to use a 32bit firefox. the openjdk is ok but it doesnt work for all sites yet. Sun Java does.
This howto is real old, I started it with Dapper Drake. As soon as Sun releases Java 7 witch will have a 64bit plugin support for this howto will end.

Personally I need it for the ability to connect to an F5 Firepass vpn. They do not provide plugins for 64b systems.

Klitz:

Are you saying that now Firefox 3.0.2 4 bits installed simply from Hardy 8.04 Synaptic Package Manager should be able to play Adobe Flash movies (e.g. youtube.com)? In my case it does not work (but an about:plugins shows .swf "Adobe Flash movie" as "enabled").

On the other hand, Firefox 32, installed from your ff32_3in1_6294.tar script plays flash movies!

Can you let me know if I am having an unusual problem and need to debug my Firefox 64 bits?

Thanks

No, this howto/script only installs the 32bit browser(s) and 32bit plugins for that 32bit browser(s) alone.

I do have another howto, its a sticky post in the 64bit section of the forum (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=772490). that deals with getting flash working on the 64bit browser. But it only deals with flash and no other plugins.

Hi.

Thank you for the 32-bit browsers and plugins, they have mostly worked splendidly. Now there seems to be a problem with the latest version of Swiftweasel. Here is the output:

the settings directory exists
settings file check passed
/usr/local/swiftweasel32-3/swiftweasel-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libplds4.so.0d: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

In fact, libplds4.so.0d resides happily in /usr/lib. What can be done?

Thanks, with getlibs it was easy to install the 32-bit versions of this library and an ssl-related one. Unfortunately, swiftweasel segfaults once they are both installed. Then I installed swiftweasel3-pgo (as opposed to only swiftweasel32-3-intel-pgo) and that did it somehow. Sorry about the noise.

None that I can think of, sorry. If it's any consolation, swiftweasel kept crashing whenever the java plugin (SUN java) was needed, so I ended up removing it anyway. I was then planning to move to Icecat, but the to the debs are dead unfortunately. To my surprise I ended up with firefox, which works for me.

Using 8.04.1 amd64.

javaplugin wasn't linked correctly, so I had to do:

cd /usr/lib32/firefox32/plugins/
rm libjavaplugin_oji.so
ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/ia32-java-6-sun-1.6.0.07/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so

(was pointing to .06)

Edit:
It is so sad that this is needed, but I'm very grateful firefox32 is available! Thank you!

I believe the command is firefox32-3If you type in the terminal firefox and then press the tab button a couple of times, it should either autocomplete or if there is more than one possibility they should all be listed. Give that a try and see what it tells you.

Are you trying to open the script file or the .tar.gz file? You need to uncompress the .tar.gz file and in the contained folder there will be a .sh script file.

My ff32 has blank icons for the forward, backward, reload, and stop icons at the upper left. Also several of the menu items are missing icons. Do you know why and how to fix?

Also it seems that ff32 has a pop-up blocker built-in and turned on, but I am unable to find anywhere to turn it on in ff64. Do I need to find an add-on or extension to do this in ff64?

This is with the current version of the script. That directory only containsflashplayer-installer libflashplayer.soat that point. Where's the xpt file supposed to come from?

I should add that the script does not have Flash working for Swiftweasel, so if that error's not why, something else is. The flashplayer-installer of course refused to run in a 64-bit environment.

Update: It was "something else" - a flashplugin-alternative.so symlink in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ - the script should either delete that link when it exists, or notify the user to delete it.

I used this script to install Firefox in Kubuntu 8.10, and it worked just fine for the most part. Firefox was installed, but the flash plugin is out of date. I already had the 32-bit java plugin installed, so I didn't bother with that either.

For the latest Flash plugin, you can get it here (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/). I just got the tar.gz version, untarred it, and copied the libflashplayer.so file to /usr/lib32/firefox32/plugins/

However, despite choosing to install all the plugin options, when I open 32 bit firefox, it doesn't appear to have any of the java plugins.

Could this be because I already have java plugins being used for my 64 bit browser?

HI!

It would help if you spesify a little bit your question!!:)

Are you using Hardy 8.04.1? Or which version of ubuntu are you using?

What java-plugin are you using in 64bit browser?

You can look if the sun java plugin is installed by typing
about:plugins in the address bar of your browser

Check also from synaptic that you have packages: sun-java6-jre and ia32-sun-java6-bin checked (installed)!

From Kilz's first post you can find lot of information and also a good "How to get help?" section!!:)

It's easier to get help by spesifying the problem!!:):guitar:

I have a problem launching firefox32-3 from the command line ... But somehow it works from the launch panel (that executes the command firefox32-3 %u ).
I am using Hardy 8.04, ff32_3in1_6294

Here I am just typing the commands found in /usr/local/bin/firefox32-3 in the bourne shell:
> which firefox32-3
/usr/local/bin/firefox32-3
> /bin/sh
$ export GTK_PATH=/usr/lib32/gtk-2.0
$ export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib32/libpangohack.so.0
$ export GDK_PIXBUF_MODULE_FILE=/etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders.32
$ killall esd
esd: no process killed
$ linux32 /usr/local/firefox32-3/firefox $@
$
(crashreporter:7148 : Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_set_sensitive: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed

Firefox32 crashes often and if I click the launcher when firefox32 is already running (rather than "new window") things get really slow.

As for the "synaptic packages: sun-java6-jre and ia32-sun-java6-bin" I'm not sure how to check that...I have sun java6 installed, but as for the plugin, it won't let me install it. What exactly is "ia32-sun-java6-bin" ? Is that usually already in synaptic or do I have to install the source for that somewhere. If so where?

Thanks

This post is really confusing. First of all it starts with "This script ...". It is unclear what "this" actually refers to in that sentence, it could be one of the many files that are linked to in this post, or it could be the text in the post itself. Most likely it is either the text itself or the file ff32_3in1_6294.tar.gz, if it is either of theese. If "this" means the file f32_3in1_6294.tar.gz, what are all the other deb packages doing in the post. As a newbie to (k)ubuntu (though not new to Linux) I expeted to find ONE single simple script that installs FF32, something like `apt-get install firefox32', eventually followed up by a question whether or not to uninstall firefox64. This is, in principle how it is done in SuSE.

Second, if this post is the authorative way to get firefox32 installed, could some ubuntu expert please update this article:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AMD64/FirefoxAndPlugins

Third: How is this done in (k)ubuntu 8.10?

Just in case it helps anyone else, I was only able to get sound in Flash working in FF32 when I edited the script to download and install Flash 10 instead of Flash 9 (likely because I had Flash 10 in my 64-bit Firefox and its associated settings were screwing with Flash 9).

To do the same, just change all references to flash_player_9_linux to flash_player_10_linux in the file, and remove the copy of the xpm (it's no longer in the .tar.gz). It's at the same location on Adobe's servers.

HI!

If you have sun java 6 installed those two packages are sun java 6. So open synaptic and use the "FIND" - tool, write there " sun-java" and it gives you a list of packages. There you should find those two: sun-java6-jre and ia32-sun- java6-bin (this package contains also the browser plugin). If they are marked (or checked, I am not sure about the exact english word) they are installed!!! Probably they are! (sun java 6 is those two packages)

Your problem may be the same than I had: the link (in 32bit browsers plugin-directory) can be broken!

First you should remove the old link:

rm /usr/lib32/firefox32/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

But please check first if it is so by going to the usr/lib32/firefox32/plugins directory before you execute the command!!! libjavaplugin_oji.so - file should have the link arrow with x over it (means broken).

Then you just do a new link (you link the java plugin again to the 32bit-browsers plugin directory):

ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/ia32-java-6-sun/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib32/firefox32/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

This link should also work if sun java is updated!!! Note thath the path is little different!

I got this advice when the sun java stopped workin when it updated from 5 to 6! And when I updated my laptop from hardy to Inteprid and the sun java didn't work on my 32bit Swiftweasel!!!

But please check first that those two packages are installed and if the link is really broken!

Hope this helps you!1:lolflag:

Hi!

I did use it and it worked! Someone else has also done it in this thread( Look page or two back!!)

Worked fine but it installed Swiftweasel 3.0.1 browser so I uninstalled it and installed the 3.0.3 pgo. I added swiftweasel to repository (used the Hardy address) to get the new version and installed it with Synaptic.

Works fine but sound is lost only in runescape the sound works! Haven't done anything for this problem.:)

Hi!

Let the firefox 3.0.3 upgrade itself to 3.0.4 and then follow Shaneks advice how to install the flash plugin (#1605 two or three pages back)!

I think it helps you!:)

dear thanks for the help,

I already tried the passage describe in message 1605, but as soon that i upgrade with 3.0.4, past the flash file in the directory, java and flash doen't work anymore.
I'm using ubuntu 8.10 64 bit with firefox-32 3.03 and as suggest i was using sun java 1.6.0.5 deleting the one installed by the script to make possible to see some web site i need.

After some try i have firefox 3.03
from about i have:
" Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0_05-b13
File name: libjavaplugin_oji.so
Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0_05 "

" Shockwave Flash

File name: libflashplayer.so
Shockwave Flash 10.0 r12 "

If some have an idea how upgrade to 3.0.4 thank's in advance

This script is a way to run the 32bit firefox on the amd64 version of Ubuntu. That way all plugins will work. The script works on Dapper, Edgy, Feisty, Gutsy, and Hardy.

Is it safe to run it on Intrepid? Any advice?
Cheers

Hi!

Yes it is, I and many others have done it!:p

But the script will install old versions of browsers and also flash is old version! So its better to update them! May be java too, I don't remember!!

You will find ways how you can do those updates if you look posts page or two or three back from this page!:lolflag:

Good luck and ask if you have problems!

Here is a stable version of flash 9(r31). Some users are reporting crashes in 8.10 with version 10.

http://www.mediafire.com/?j5dj1dglmy2

Place in /usr/lib32/firefox32/plugins and you're all set.

I have the following problem. I have kde4 and double-clicking the 3in1 file and selecting 'run in terminal' is not an option. So I assume sh ./3in1is sufficient...and I get this error. I found an earlier post addressing this but if a workaround was listed I missed it. Thanks in advance!!!

my wish for cristhmass ??
a script to install under ubuntu 8.10-64bit, Adobe flash 10, java 32, ecc

Thank you
:lolflag:

I agree. WRT the browser and plugins, 8.10 is a big step back for me. I had 32 bit Firefox 3.0.3 working sort of OK. At least flash was working which is more than I have on the 64 bit browser. Then it updated itself to 3.0.5 and all plugins are gone.

I also need a working Java plugin and can't seem to figure out how to do that.

I've fiddled with Linus for years now since before the v1.0 kernel was out. I'm really tired of taking days or weeks to get stuff working. I just want it to work.

Maybe its time to just switch back to 32 bit Linux.

Oh well... Many thanks to Kilz for keeping this effort going this far. His desire to leave it behind leaves us knowing how much of a difference he made.

HI KILZ!

This howto is Obsolete
When I started this thread long ago on June 23, 2006 I never in would have thought it would last this long and help so many people. It may yet help someone. But for the majority of users this is outdated info. A 64bit Flash and Sun Java plugin are available. Granted they are still under development, but both seem to work as well if not better than the 32bit.
Its been fun, but I wont be actively supporting this thread any more. I encourage all 64bit users to move to the 64bit plugins asap.

Kilz

Thank you for using so much effort for this, you have done great job!:lolflag:

After getting fed-up with nspluginwrapper crashing ever few pages, I just got firefox working with all 64-bit plugins that were released two weeks ago.

Flash can be downloaded here: http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html (see tar.gz link at the bottom)

It's a fairly straightforward install--copy the plugin into a plugins directory--make sure you have removed anything to do with "nspluginwrapper".

Java can be downloaded at http://download.java.net/jdk6/ (go the very last section, AMD64 Linux)

extract java to /usr/local/jdk (or jre).

For java, the plugin is in jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so
(Don't look in plugins because that folder is empty)

sudo update-alternatives --install /etc/alternatives/java java /usr/local/jre/bin/java 100
sudo update-alternatives --install /etc/alternatives/jar jar /usr/local/jre/bin/jar 100
sudo update-alternatives --install /etc/alternatives/javac javac /usr/local/jdk/bin/javac 100

sudo update-alternatives --config java
sudo update-alternatives --config javac
sudo update-alternatives --config jar

java -version

sudo ln -s /usr/local/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so /usr/lib/firefox/plugins

Hope this helps

I've been trying like crazy to install 32 bit libs and different 64 bit plugins and are beginning to wonder if I should just install XP instead... :(

What plugin directory is it that file should be copied to, and what more has to be done?

/usr/lib/firefox/plugins/ seems to work for me (Kubuntu -- 8.04.1 Hardy Heron AMD-64). I copied the v10 flash .so file to every damn plugin directory there is and it works. For now.

Someone should update that nice and fancy step-by-step guide with screenshots and all.

To get this to work, I had to put libnpjp2.so in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ NOT /usr/lib/firefox/plugins.

I was able to follow the above instructions just fine (I also provided update-alternatives for java_vm, javaws, and jcontrol when things didn't work). Output of 'java -version' is build 1.6.0_12-ea-b03. I linked libnpjp2.so into both /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins and /usr/lib/firefox/plugins. My problem is, in firefox 3.0.5, I have java and javaScript enabled, but if I go to any example test site like http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml , I get nade. I also have sun-java6-bin and sun-java6-jre (pointing to 6.07-3ubuntu2) via synaptic. I tried to remove them, but it was going to remove nearly ALL my applications which depend on java (eclipse, libxerces, libcommons..., etc.). Anyone have a clue what is going on here? (p.s. I'm not a java expert - just use apps which depend on a good jre).

IMHO,
Java is a application that constantly needs updating, its growing way too fast.I heard someone back in this thread say they could not play games on "Pogo", I have never had that problem since I ran klitz,z
script
Albeit, one of there games crashes on me also.I hope you can find the answer that will correct your problem karlatsaic, Sun Java not being open source may also play a role in these problems.

Good Luck

Flash Player 10 64bit is ALPHA!
Not all pages will recognize it as flash, nor will all flash video play with it!
Amazon.com Video-On-Demand, for example doesn't work with flash player 10 64bit.
So, no, there is not a 64bit Flash player 10 for Linux, yet. There is a 64bit flash player10 being tested.
Using a 32bit installation of Firefox is not outdated....yet.

I had a lot of issues with 32 bit Flash Player and nspluginwrapper on 64 bit Ubuntu: plugin crashes (try opening a page with tons of Flash applets), Firefox crashes, Xorg crashes also (bug reported on Launchpad and confirmed). That's why in the past I've used the information on this thread to install Firefox 32 bit.
Now, using native Flash plugin, I've no one of the above problems, browsing experience is at least comparable to the one on 32 bit systems.
There's only a performance problem on full screen YouTube video which I can live with.

If you ask me which is the best way to use Flash plugin on 64 bit systems, I can surely confirm that now it's the 64 bit Adobe Flash 10 beta plugin.
If you have to use Amazon.com Video-On-Demand service you still have the chance to install Firefox 32 ;)

Well, shoot.

No, this is not outdated, except for the fact that there is no option for Intrepid since you decided people shouldn't use your wonderful method anymore :(

There are plenty of plugins that won't work on 64bit still, would be very nice to have an option that would allow people to run them.

I had 32 bit swiftweasel running in Intrepid. Following upgrade to Jaunty, it continues to work.

You might try the instructions for Intrepid and see if you can work them out for Jaunty.

Kilz,

Do you still consider this guide obsolete considering that Adobe has pulled the 64-bit flash support?

I've been considering installing the Maverick in 64-bit when it's finally released but even the download page now stated 64-bit is NOT recommended for daily usage, and I wonder if that is due to the situation with adobe flash.

Quick and dirty log of how I got FF32 + Java6 to work on my Lucid install, starting with the script from the first post. Not all commands are to be executed in the same directory, you need to know your way with command-line and use common sense, sorry.
And for those wondering why we still need this: in my case I need to run a full Webex session and Webex's Java Applet is still broken on Ubuntu 64bits, trying to load 32bit shared libs.

wget http://home.comcast.net/~ubuntume/ff32_3in1_6294.tar.gz (http://home.comcast.net/%7Eubuntume/ff32_3in1_6294.tar.gz)
tar xvzf ff32_3in1_6294.tar.gz
./3in1 (choose Hardy + no browser, no flash; no java - but some packages will still fail to install...)

#finish installing ff32bit
wget -c "http://home.comcast.net/~ubuntume/firefox32-3.0.1-ubuntu_7.10-8.04_amd64.deb"

Does anybody have these instructions for something newer than Firefox 3.0.1 and Ubuntu 8.04. Sure, I could go looking for the packages and I probably will when I get the time, but it'd be great for people not to have to do that. Assuming I do have the time to go look for the packages, I will post here, but don't expect that for a few weeks at best.
