Here is the deal, I rebuilt an HP 6400 laptop that I bought from my company for my own use using Ubuntu 11.04. The machine was more than three years old and had a failing OEM battery. I replaced the battery with a Batteries Plus unit and followed their instructions (cycle to full and then from full to full discharge 3 times). I replaced the battery in DEC 11 and as of this date, JUN 12 the computer has never recognised it properly as a new unit. The system works when it is unplugged from wall power but the battery failure light immediately lights on the front panel of the machine as soon as wall power is removed. The power monitoring icon in Ubuntu sporadically sees the battery state or whether the battery is plugged/unplugged from the wall. I suspect that this is an issue between the MB bios and the Ubuntu Advanced Power Monitoring Application.
I am running 11.04 because I hate the Unity GUI. Any ideas, comments or fixes you have found are welcome.
