I am considering installing Kubuntu in an SSD and using the mechanical drive for file storage only. I did some gooling and it does not seem too complicated of a process; however, I was wondering if anyone out there has any suggestions with regards to the brand and type of SSD to use based on compatibility with Linux/Kubuntu. Thanks in advance for your patience.

My specs:

Intel motherboard 775 socket
Intel quad-core chip
ATI Radeon video card
Sony DVD-R
4GB Memory
Kubuntu 12.04, 64 bit

I do not remember what one it was, but several have posted about a SSD that had built in RAID. Back then it was Windows only. Not sure if fixed now, but I do not understand having RAID on an SSD anyway.

My SSD is just a low-cost (cheap) Microcenter house brand 60GB drive. While not as fast as some, it still boots amazingly fast. But I still cannot type any faster, nor are Internet downloads any faster, so I consider it a bit of a luxury.

You are correct, it would be a luxury. I want to increase the speed and responsiveness of the system itself. I have a OCZ Vertex 3 60GB SSD, which I am currently using as a portable drive. According to some reviews on sites such as "CNET" and "tomshardware.com", the OCZ Vertex 3 drives are somewhat decent. Have you or anyone out there heard anything different about the OCZ SSDs? Thanks in advance for your help.

I think this is now older info, but you needed to update some internals?

Thanks for the info in the OCZ. Have you heard anything about Samsung 830? It seems to enjoy good reviews for the most part. The setup will still be as previously mentioned, Kubuntu on the SSD and files on the mechanical. Thanks in advance for your help and patience with all these questions.

Oldfred, thanks for your help. I just installed the SSD and it is running very well. It took 10 secons to the login screen and about 3 to 4 seconds to the Kubuntu welcome sound. Thanks again.
