On a debate I had with a person I know......

on Open Source esp. Linux vs. Windows after I showed him the video of Bill Gates on a show and the software froze at CES.

This is his quote. "I prefer Piracy above open source"

MAN!
Now if someone pirates it their choice, but, now I know why we, the OSS / Linux community have to struggle to get on the Desktop. 50% of their OS'es and software that run on them are Pirated, then the people who use it defends M$ and says that Windows ar "much beter" than Linux.

What do you guys think?

I have a old 2004 PC-Magazine where they say Microsoft estimates 95% of all Windows based computers in China are running on pirated copies. <-- If they would start mass projects Linux based like Brazil or Andalusia, Spain...

I think people like taking risks, they just don't know in this case the risks are not worth taking.

BTW, 50% only pirated? You sure, I could count with my 2 hands the number of people I know with original Windows -that did not came with a PC , MS Office, Photoshop, Maya, Nero or Sony Architect [600dollars dvd authoring software I use].

yep your probably right.

But it still grinds me that people still prefer a Pirated Windows etc to a good OS like Linux :( yeah it still needs to come a long way but its free. as in Speech and beer.

I really don't think people use Windows because of the pirated whatever. It's just that they just aren't informed and have not experienced this. Sure you can find people claiming "Why change I Like it @!" But should you push further you would no normal user is really proud of M$.

I dont know how many times I have heard die-hard Windows users *bless* Bill Gate's mother for creating such a crappy *scrap* like ME, XP. The mass is so used to having security breaches and viruses that they deliberately refuse to believe there is a better path, sure it has a learning curve, but dont you have to work for good things?

People just dont want to be thaught. They get so mad at their OS, yet the do nothing about it, claiming *its to advanced or hard*. This applies to my bigger brother, he claims this is way too hard for him and he would never be able to use it and he likes M$, but when I'm downloading stuff and I leave the computer On I leave it logged in so they can use it, and I have seen him go
Applications > Internet > Gaim/Firefox and 2ble clicking on an mp3 and getting beep player, something hes accustomed to from Winamp.

The easy way is people are just s2pid, but I like to think theyre so brainwashed they think they dont have other option.

* Once I finally learn how to create my own Live disc, Imma make a custom brew with the apps people use the most here, and give out on people I know so I can get their reactions/problems/comments. After 85% tell me they got it working, bomb shell drops: "Would you like to take a plunge at this?" ;) *

yeah I suppose its in the human nature to risist change even if they dont know any better.

I was also thinking of a live cd with all the stuff that people use in Windows and then setting it up so that it basically has the feel of Windows and then gradually taking them away from that way of thinking but alas I am still quite a noober in Linux although I learn fast.

I broke my XFree86 messing around with X86Config-4 and now I cant log in ;) I see the old file ( backup ) listed as X86Config-4~ but I dont know how to change it back ;) but its funn and I'm playing around. next time I know BE CAREFULL WITH the CONFIG! ](*,)

Anyway my point is it was the same when I learnt DOS 6 and Windows 95 etc.

So one must try get the people to WANT to play around and in the same time make Linux GUI esp. easier

Yep MS wont see ANY $$$ from me either. Never again.

Or, to summarise, if there's a better way then why isn't everyone using it?

One of the main problems is simply the software market. People will go where they are told, as long as they are told by someone they deem 'above' them. If Adobe says 'use Windows to use Photoshop' then people will quickly think 'I have to use Windows. Nothing else is good enough for Adobe!'. People are sheep, and they are lead by marketting and media more than they are led by common sense and practicality. If the marketting guys say jump, the world says a collective 'how high?'

The way I see it, the best thing that can happen for the uptake of Linux is that MS finds a way to cut pirating to < 10%, so I'm really hoping their product activation works.

If you present people with a Linux desktop (OO, Gimp, Evolution, ...) and say it is free, they say "I don't want it, it is not my windows software".

Then present them with XP, MS Office and tell them to pay 3-400 €, they will quickly ask for the free CD again.

As it stands today, the price of Win/Office is 0 € in practice, just as expensive as Linux.

THis is probably the single most important issue with people not adopting Linux. I've heard it COUNTLESS times "Will my Corel Draw work on it" "Can I use Excell" - No but you can use a bette app caled OpenOffice "hmmmm nah- I have to have Excell"
( I dont really believe the WINE way is the way to try and convince people - although it helps ) - And if you do have to use wine FOR GOODNESS SAKE please dont make the mistake of telling them that.

MAN THAT GRINDS ME. LOOK AT IT DAMNIT!!! TRY IT BEFORE SAYING ITS S**T!!

Sorry but yeah.... That is the problem.

At least those are decent apps, I have gotten "can I chat there?", sometimes I want to become supersaijan level14 and just say "no you $%^&* we *nixers dont have a social life we hve to write 3000lines codes to gt things working , go back to xp and say hello to peter norton for me."

I second the "No-Wine for Convincing" policy. They would think "why Wine when i have the real thing?". People cant even imagine how cool it is to say "I wonder if ther any cool apps , let me open synaptic and browse off ...".

And the most annoying thing ive heard "What if it f$^s my computers?" . I mean come on people, you withstand years of tortures from melissa, blaster and others and you think you can get worst than this?! please wake up.

My argument is this for those neophytes --> How many yrs on Windows do you have ? 5 . What have you learned ? chat ... kazaa ... msn ... word !! > What is your brain doing when youre in front of your PC for yours screwing around ? getting smarter? I think not. M$-W is the only OS i know that someone with a month's experience could virtually do the same someone with years does : chat , p2p , browser .

... im quite "extensive" today

Some people know so little about computers that the thought of _not_ running windows on a PC is wrong. Like someone will come after then for surfing the net without paying. They prefer to stick with windows, although pirated, because they feel safer.

use a demo copy and reinstall after 30 days.

I really agree with you guys there.

When I tell people I know who don't use linux or whatever (aka; almost everyone I know) about linux being free, almost 70% of them simply say "Windows is free". The thing is, they have no clue; they are so used to getting their computers from best buy complete with windows, office, and more.

When somebody sees the computer they are about to buy with two price tags: Windows $1200 - Linux $1050; that is when Linux will crush microsoft. Until then, it's fun being the underdog.

$1200? Excuse me but where the hell do you buy your computers  ? If I was going to spend $1200 on a computer I'd get an Apple.

p.s. i don't pirate software.

When our family gets a new computer I'm going to try to convince them to get Apple Macintosh OSX. The only thing that would keep them from getting it would be that we would all new software. Any Windows emulators for OSX that don't cost $200 like Apple's official one?

People like to think they're getting the greatest and latest computers (expecially my family). So they go go best buy and get the best computer. The price was a little out there though anyways ;)

It's often true though.

Usually for gaming or workstation (video editing, CAD/CAM, graphics, game design and etc). Some popular places for these high-end x86 computers:
GamePC (http://www.gamepc.com/) do let the name fool you. They also sell high end workstations
Falcon North-West (http://www.falcon-nw.com/)
AlienWare (http://www.alienware.com/)

There are quite a few invalid reasons such as people that fear change, peoplt that only think they can work with a certain program, etc. But the one I can't quite argue with is games. I have some friends that would gladly switch if Linux could play some good games (I'm not talking about solitaire). Of course being a game developer myself, I'm hoping to fix that. I dream of only doing full time linux development some day...

Does Canonical Ltd. need any game programmers?

I am slowly switching to linux, but I would totally switch over if game developers made games compatable with linux. The only thing stopping me right now is Warcraft.

I do pirate, but I love open source software.

Sounds like a "kubuntu" type distro variant. These are healthy. Get to work!

Gubuntu?
