jack server not running

running Precise on a 64 bit HP G62 laptop. Running espeak in a python bot I'm writing, everything seems to work pretty well but after each line I get:

a quick search of the net and the forums shows this to be a fairly frequent thing, but I haven't really found a fix that works. Installed jackd IAW one thread (that I can't seem to find now).

Any ideas?
