I have been shopping around for a new laptop for the past couple of weeks, but even with a lot of online research have been getting a bit confused about what hardware to avoid or seek out, particularly in terms of which CPU/GPU combinations allow for full support of Unity 3D in Ubuntu 12.04, making the selection process very complicated and frustrating.

Does anyone happen to have any suggestions to help in my search? I'm looking for something with the following basic specs:

Intel Core i5 (or i3, if necessary)
at least 4GB RAM
at least 500GB HDD
17" display
Integrated Wireless b/g/n
HDMI
support for Unity 3D
preferably ~$500-$600

Thanks in advance!

Lenovo Edge 11

An i3 but ridiculous fast for the money, and it's Ubuntu Certified.

Diffrence in i3 and i5 is just in turbo boost. So it is either i3 or i7

Ah, ok. Is the difference moot in this case because Ubuntu is unable to utilize the turbo boost option?

Regardless, given the average price difference between i3 and i7, I would be more inclined to go with an i3 for my purposes.

this provides users with the opportunity to turn off a core if itís not being utilized.

If you have i3 or i5 the only diffrence you will notice is in your wallet :)
