Hi found this gem on the web and found out it is available in synaptic under univers/games. Called TORCS it is a very well done racing game with a variety of cars to drive and tracks. Though not all that diffivcult it provides a challenge for the player to come out first. The graphics are very well done and driving the car is veryrealistic and managable compared to pther racing games. I had lots of fun checking this game out.

If you like TORCS, check out VDrift (http://vdrift.net). Slightly different but equally fun is ManiaDrive (http://maniadrive.raydium.org/).

I've been playing Torcs for a long time, though I found that if you enable the quality setting with the nvidia driver (at least last time I tried it) you could see inside your car from the outside.

There really are some great gems in the repositories as far as free games go. Some of my favorites are iMaze (Anyone remember the Midi Maze game on the Atari ST? First game I ever played that was networkable.), Slash'em (nethack clone, with so much more), Metal Blob Solid, several tron light cycle games, FreeCiv, etc.

Really, when people ask me if there are games for Linux, I tell them there are tons of them, just that if they are hard core gamers that absolutely have to have the latest commercial FPS they'll probably not find what they're looking for in Linux.

This is a tad off topic, but the thing that is really sad these days is that with Windows, it's scary to be online (at least people should be afraid of it) and yet even if all you did was play video games on your PC, you'd still have to have a net connection of some kind, simply for updates, and in worse case scenarios, authentication methods. This is what irks me about the new NWN Premium Module (and all of them, really) is that before you can even load a saved game, it has to authenticate. What if I am on my laptop without wireless, sitting in some diner waiting for a friend to show up and trying to play NWN. I simply can't because of their authentication method. Pretty lame, I'd say.

P.S. Sorry for the off topic Rant. it's 9:44am and I haven't slept since 4:20pm the previous day....

I think it's a new methode to stop piracy I guess, leech. But I agree it's tiresome and annoying....but I have all of them premium modules nevertheless  ...I'm addicted to that game :-/

I understand the anti-piracy thing, and I am still considering buying it. But you'd think limiting it to just authenticating when creating a new game would be enough, because at least then I could create a new game at home, and play it elsewhere. Also it makes it so that you can't use it on a dedicated server, though they said they were looking into that.

But it's just a general bad thing to require a game to authenticate itself over the internet, Raven Shield was the same way, if you happen to be at a lan party that they disconnect the net at, then you can't play it.

It becomes so that the pirates get their way around the different copy protections and the legitimate buyers of the software are the ones who are punished. Anyhow, just some thoughts.

I go in spurts playing different games, I haven't played nwn in a long while now. Been playing Oblivion, Vampire Bloodlines, Call of Cthulu (that one is a pain in the butt) and Sacred lately. Must be on a Role-Playing binge :D
