Your social network is only ever going to be as good as:

How interesting your "friends" are
How much motivation you have to socialise with them

Neither of these are within Facebook's control, incidentally.

I'm with the OP. If there's no family picture posted with a comment I just keep scrolling quickly down the page. I'm not at all interested if someone had coffee, used the restroom, played with the kids or shopped. Why people feel as though others need to know their every move, every complaint and every feeling is beyond me. Even friends in the real world don't want to know all that!! :)

I consider myself a 30 seconds a week Facebook lurker. I occasionally stop to look at someone's family pictures from vacations, graduations and other events, but general comments are just not very interesting to waste time reading.

Tbh, unless your actual friends are on there and can invite you, there won't be much to do when you get there. I got an invite a while back but have never posted, as nobody I know uses it. Getting an invite from Disapora themselves or from a stranger is a bit pointless.

It's very similar to Google Plus anyway.

I have a facebook page but never use it. A lot of my family and friends are on there a lot. I have no desire to tell someone what I'm doing every second. I also put Twitter in the same vein as Facebook. Business use is the only thing that seems to be of benefit in this kind of social networking. If you are a private person then you need to stay away.

aysiu
May 30th, 2012, 05:08 PM
I have no desire to tell someone what I'm doing every second. Some people use Facebook this way, but you don't have to. In fact, one of the nice things about Facebook is that you can mute posts from certain "friends" if they obnoxiously over-post. If I have a "friend" who posts something every second or every minute, I just unsubscribe from her updates, and there's peace again. I also feel no pressure to post every second or even every day. But unfortunately a lot of people don't email, call, or write letters any more, so if I want to know what they're up to, Facebook is a convenient place to check for me.

I just say live and let live. If you want to use Facebook, use it. If you don't want to use it, don't use it. I see no reason to bash people who use it.

No Facebook for me either.

I don't have a lot of family overseas that i want or need to keep in touch with, and the negatives like loss of Privacy, idiots, living your life through a computer etc make it not worth it, for me anyway.

Like the very first time i tried it out .... "Oh hey dude, how's it going? :D " from the guy who beat me up and stole my girlfriend back in school ....... "Get stuffed".

Or long-forgotten ex-girlfriends rearing their ugly heads, stirring up trouble ..... i was hard to get over apparently ..... no thanks!!

I know you can turn all this kind of stuff off, but i can't be bothered wading through all the options. Besides, Facebook will just arbitrarily change their privacy policy next week, and then boom, all of my stuff will be visible again.

I probably don't know what i'm missing, but then if i don't know what i'm missing .... i don't know what i'm missing :D

Seriously though, as previously, and quite correctly, pointed out, it's a tool, that works exceptionally well for many peoples needs. Just not mine.

I dropped Facebook as well. Hell, the only people I talked to on a regular basis were people I saw face to face on a regular basis. Everyone else on the list were people I never saw, never talked to, had no real ties with.

After the millionth request for some stupid game - I dropped it.

FB is just drama and besides it's a great way for ID thieves get information on you - and it's a great way for employers to see the real you before deciding to pass on your resume for someone that doesn't have sloppy drunk Friday night pictures posted.

I signed up to Facebook years ago. However I never even filled in the profile. I'm glad it never went any further. Facebook is great for family and friends who live miles away and need to keep in touch, but the whole privacy thing will always be an issue for me. I honestly think people hand over far too much information. They probably know a lot about people in the background.

That's dead right. I very rarely go on facebook, but whenever I do my home page is just full up of people complaining and having little dramas. It's ridiculous that someone would actually want to go and post that kind of information on the internet for all there friends and strangers to see. Facebook is great. It's the people on it who annoy me.

At least you can tune out the people who annoy you - you can stop their posts from appearing on your wall. I have over 100 "friends" who I just added for the only Facebook game I play, but their posts don't bother me because I don't see them.

I disagree. The whole set up of facebook is orientated around you handing out all your info to everyone. Granted, if you want to trawl through pages of privacy garble, you can tweek it, but all that stuff should come by default. And also, they only publicize the "deactivate facebook profile" function, and the "delete facebook profile" function is completely hidden.

But it does exist.

Facebook is great. It's the people on it who annoy me. I have the opposite experience. I love the people on it (at least the ones I'm friends with), but I don't find Facebook great at all. I don't like their constant UI redesigns, their constant limiting of customization, their updated privacy setting defaults without user intervention, or their general user interface (no matter what the latest redesign is). I also don't like how their Android app automatically uses your GPS, even if you turn location off in the settings. I've had to set up through Tasker a Facebook launcher that turns GPS off first, waits a few seconds, and then launches the actual Facebook app.

I'd be more than happy if all my friends moved over to Google+. Google totally botched the launch of G+, but the interface and features it has are much better than Facebook's.

Am I the only one that deletes people? I only keep up with real people that I know and care about on facebook. There are those few that are less then tech savy sending me stupid cafe invites and crap. But I dont have people on my "friends" list that I dont know of care about. I have been even known to reject friends request "A LOT". I got like 132 people on my list that consist of Family, Friends that are close I grew up with, Friends that I served with and was close to in the military and a few teachers that I appreciated growing up.

So for those of you with 400+ people on your list, are they your friends or just acquaintances you met?
