Hello guys I have a problem I have been looking the forums for 3 hours now. I can't seem to find an answer to my question. On the other hand maybe I am not familiar with this operating system to properly help my self :lolflag:

Here goes I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop LTS 64 bit to my home made desktop via usb drive that works fine but for the life of me I can not install my cd driver for my wireless Netgear N-300 usb.

Its something about it can not load exe files or something to the effect of that.

I do not have a modem installed to my motherboard and also I am 30 to 40 ft away from my modem so bringing out a cable is not really an option.

Right now I have a wireless connection thats going to my laptop that still has windows 7 on it that's how I am able to ask this question.

I need help or I need to know what router will work with ubuntu. Thanks and I hope some one can help me.

Ubuntu doesnt detect your wireless I gather?
Its odd that the neatgear isnt being picked up as netgear usually works with ubuntu.
Did you reboot ubuntu and see if it picked up the wireless?

The Operating System you are currently using is Linux, its not Windows. .exe files are for Windows only they don't work on Linux-Ubuntu.

See this post (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1695036)

Also read this (http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm), this (http://www.reallylinux.com/docs/windowstolinux.shtml) and this (http://www.michaelhorowitz.com/Linux.vs.Windows.html).

.exe is for Windows (only), where Ubuntu takes shell scripts, Python scripts, .deb files, and etc.
You can try WINE for some Windows programs, but it doesn't always work. Also, don't use it for installing drivers, it just won't work like that.

First off, Welcome crazymike187!! Hope you're enjoying new-found freedom.

Secondly, you have a wireless card which does not have a native Linux driver. Think closed-source drivers. Anyway, you should be able to get it working with an environment know in the Linux community as ndiswrapper, which is simply a way to use Windows drivers via a "wrapper" program. Have a look here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11834101&postcount=81) as it discusses precisely (no pun intended) how to resolve this issue. There is a link to a driver which should work for you.

Well I have read some of the trouble shooting threads that you guys gave me and I failed miserably however I think my problem is where do I extract files so when input my terminal commands it actually detects the programs I have installed.

Other than that I like you can input commands in the terminal I just wish I knew the language a little more:)

I wanted to thank you guys for the help so far and I would say up a little longer so I can tinker with this more but I need sleep. So hopefully the adventure of figuring out how Ubuntu works continues tomorrow. Laters :guitar:
