install via usb goes smoothly until reboot.

at this point, the video stops working: screen is misaligned horizontally and flickers badly.

ubuntu prompts me for my password, seems to accept it, then does nothing.

Take a look at the nomodeset option.

If this gets you in get fully updated and look in the additional drivers app, after rebooting if told to for any drivers offered.

Also next to the password is a gear that drops down and should offer a 2d Ubuntu as well.

I'm also thinking about replacing my ageing Dell Dimension 5150 with an XPS 8500, but having second thoughts on reading this post.

Did the advice given solve the problem?

Have you tried to boot in recovery mode? It should load the standard Super-VGA/VGA driver for your video card. Then install the latest updated driver for your video card. Normally you will get a hardware card update icon on taskbar1 (top of screen), just follow the instructions.
