OS: Ubuntu 12.04
Video: HD 6850 with fglrx driver (from amd web site)
CPU: core i7-950
Problem: high cpu ussage when in gnome-3. Specifically the program gnome-shell uses 40-80% CPU (mostly closer to 80%) Any ideas how to find what is the source of the problem. Thanks

It's for nvidia drivers, but it may be worth a try doing similar things for you fglrx driver.

I am having similar issues with my mythtv setup. It's running mythbuntu 12.04-64 on AMD with NVidia graphics, and Xfce instead of Gnome3, but the machine's load is above 1 when it is idle. Nothing shows up in top as a CPU hog, either. I tried changing from the standard NVidia driver to the newer one, but that didn't help, and neither did turning them both off. Kind of frustrating, but at least it came up during summer rerun season...
