During the past few months I have been playing around with ubuntu dapper and xgl and I have found it amazing. It just keeps getting better and better by the day. Ubuntu already includes lots of great software but some are really hard to find. So I ended up going to gnomefiles.org to see what kind of software is available for the gnome desktop and then figure out if it would or how to get it to work on ubuntu.

I also have found the ubuntu forums and wikis very useful. What I have found useful with ubuntu dapper is when I come across a deb package I don't have to mess around with my source.list. I could just click on it and Gdebi starts installing the program. It is the Ubuntu one click install method and its awesome. I am thinking of creating an ubuntufiles.org website which describes the software and all one would have to do is click on a download button to install the program.

I am interested to here of what the community would think of a website like this. I think that this would be extremely helpful for people who are new to ubuntu and linux in general. There are thousands of software available in the repositories and for a newbie they would not have a clue of where to start.

I think that something like ubuntufiles.org can help open the doors to all the freely available and open source software that is out there. Plus since it would be only specific for Ubuntu and you are a Ubuntu user, you would know that it should work on your system, well most of the time:D

Anyway, let me know what you think.

Are you by any means talking about something that klik already does?

http://klik.atekon.de/

Well, tell you the truth, klik is kind of weird, and it doesn't have a really good interface, but it gets its job done.

If you concentrate on making a website like you described I'd suggest good Names to packages and good Descriptions. For it to be user friendly, it must do that. Because alot of people just think it's too hard to understand what lib(enter the name of a library here), so instead of libx you could put the actual names of the libraries and put the libraries in the libraries section.

You might also look into autopackage program http://autopackage.org/

Think around making it look user friendly though (I mean the website).

But it's definitely a good idea for centralized ubuntu packages website.

Well not quite like klik...it looks like they repackage the software so you could install it. I want to use deb packages that are already there in the ubuntu repository. Ubuntu Dapper already comes preinstalled with Gdebi which allows you to just click on a deb package and it will start installing on to your system. Which means no opening up a terminal and sudo apt-get install whatever. You just click on the link to the deb package it starts downloading then Gdebi takes over and starts installing it in your system. I agree with you though making it look user friendly would by key for it to work.

Ah, so you just want to make a website that gets the packages from the repositories. Why I am saying that is because people can already go to some .deb serving website and just downloaded it using "Open With" direction in firefox and choosing gdebi (which should be there by default).

I'm not quite sure if linux actually allows that, though... I remember trying to use "Open With" with an archive (That would mean opening file-roller) but when it opened file-roller, it also said that it couldn't find the file or something.
