12.04 Unity, of course. A little messy right now, I just threw stuff together that looked good by itself and didn't really go together. I'll probably ditch the Awoken icons in favor of Faenza or something, and might try to make colors match.

Oh gosh, do not post the image straight in.

What is that icon theme? Looks pretty sweet.

It's freely based on 'Dekoration', 'Frankfurt-am-main' and 'multicolor-Gnome'. Just recoloring it to fit ambiance black color, adding reflection to it etc. etc.
+ adding 100s of new icons to it.
I have no name for it yet.

Simple. No nonsense.

And this is the very best thing you could possibly do if you found yourself in any US Air Force aircraft, in my humble opinion.

Hoo Ah! Airborne!

(Stock Army photo)

Hmm. Looks like I need to do a bit of color correction between the monitors.

My first screenshot of the month. Nothing new on my desktop's Ubuntu 11.10 GNOME Shell since last month. Still have a very Mac OS X style interface (sans global app menu). Still running my Legend of Zelda theme, with gold icons and radiance theme (a kind of marble and gold theme). No real changes, only minor tweaks.

Nope, but you get the same effect by using the default ubuntu theme + his emerald theme. Pretty much. If you want the side panel black you can edit Ambiance config file. But I'm not using side panels, can better like the simple approach in the file manager.

See the pkg-config man page for more details.

Wow very nice, thanks for the link to this theme. I like the default theme in ubuntu but sometimes the orange and purple gets a bit much. This with the same look but just different colors is exactly what I was looking for.

Wish ubuntu would release an official set of themes based on the default theme but with different colors like gnome-colours etc.

For the dash, the change occurred when I applied the theme. Changing the wallpaper changes the launcher color. Though I wish the launcher color could be changed manually.

Heh, I see some people have yet to switch to Pangolin. :P (No rush in upgrading anyway if support is still there for another six months or so, I assume.) And you've still got some sweet desktops as usual DCViper!

Anyway, my Xubuntu Desktop : http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t410/johnluke728/XubuntuDesktop4.jpg

Distro : Ubuntu Precise Pangolin 12.04 LTS
Desktop Environment : Xfce 4
Icon Theme : Human - Dark
Window Style : Albatross with Vista panels
Background : Weekly Vaporeon - by erina on deviantArt

Still trying to figure out how to get rid of that mail icon all over again, DOH! Removing Gwibber didn't seem to do the trick this time. Also, creating a My Computer icon isn't exactly easy either, still don't know what to do about that. xD My desktop otherwise feels fully personalized!

Got a screenshot of another Live USB test run.

Full-size screenshots here:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v245/viperdvman/Screenshots/ScreenshotAtlasX1.jpg

This is a Debian-based distro called AtlasX (link here (http://www.atlasx.org/)), running the Enlightenment desktop environment. It was featured as being newly added to Distrowatch's waiting list last week. And being an Enlightenment-based distro, it naturally grabbed my attention. I like that comes with more pre-installed apps than Bodhi does, but that's really about it. I can customize it very much the same way I can customize Bodhi. It does run a lot of GNOME apps, including Nautilus, which leads me to believe that it's actually running Enlightenment as its window manager on top of GNOME 2. One problem, though, is that its multi-monitor capabilities absolutely suck. It detected and ran on one monitor, and ONLY one monitor... my secondary one (reason for the screenshot's 1600x900 resolution). I hope Bodhi doesn't do that when I finally decide to install it to my hard drive.

Other than adding a couple of pre-installed apps to the iBar on the bottom, all I've done was change the wallpaper to my Pokemon "Eeveelutions" (custom-made by me). It's not bad if you're looking for a Debian-based Enlightenment rather than an Ubuntu-based (Bodhi) or Puppy-based (Macpup) Enlightenment distro.

Computer: Desktop
Distro: AtlasX
Desktop Environment: Enlightenment E17
Desktop Theme: Default
Window Theme: Default
Wallpaper: custom Pokemon "Eeveelutions" wallpaper
Icons: Default
Special Features: Auto-hiding Shelf on top with menu, workspace switcher, clock, and systray (default). iBar dock on bottom (default)

Oneiric has another year left in it, and this is my work machine. I can't afford to switch until the end of my school term (which is admittedly less than two weeks out.)

So, not much change. I keep using more minimalist and default-looking wallpapers, which probably means I'll end up with a flat color within a couple of months.

I'm making a lot of use of Tomboy now for every kind of notes and quick composing, most of the things I'd normally use gedit for. The way it handles bulleted lists and the searchability are absurdly useful. I hate not being able to directly manipulate the files in any meaningful way, but I also love not having to do so. I think it's going to be a feature of my desktop experience from now on. Using Shell means I can just leave the search window open at all times on my "stuff I leave open all the time" desktop, and that makes it a lot more useful than the tray icon does.

Edit: Oh, hey, anyone ever use xwit to unmap a random LibreOffice window? I hate waiting for LibreOffice to load every time I open a document file. Now it just never exits when it runs out of windows. It's nice.

Yes, and the panel itself only slides into view if you put the mouse cursor into the bottom right edge.

Many KDE widgets have the ability to be placed in panel and appear on click.

That's a beautiful minimalist theme. I was thinking that with Xubuntu, if you moved the window decorations to full transparency, you could get 'almost' the same look.

Hey there.
How do I add applets like that on my desktop?

You need to install conky:

sudo apt-get install conky
Or do so, the graphical way, via the Software Center.
However, if you're not an experienced user, don't use Conky. You'll have to deal with a lot of configuring, editing,... in order to set it up the way you want it.
(of course, if you ARE experienced, wait for him to give you the configs)

Instead, you can use screenlets:

sudo apt-get install screenlets screenlets-pack-all
(include screenlets-pack-all if you want all the screenlets, which will take up about 50MB)
Screenlets are pretty much like widgets in Windows Vista/7, just start it, add the screenlets, and drag and drop the screenlets to move them.

The fellow who created Voyager has co-developed a system that lets you switch, add and remove conky scripts on the fly. Though I'm not all that conversant in conky it seems like a cool and user friendly way of doing things. Instructions for installing it are here (http://voyager.legtux.org/index.php/conky-control/).

You'll have to use Google to translate if you don't speak French.

You need to install conky. The conky I'm using is the famous vinDSL (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1771033) conky. But that one might be a challenging to work with if you are new to conky.

EDIT: are you using Compiz's transparency effect?

Yea had to install Compiz Settings Mgr, the setting is under Opacity, Brightness and Saturation. Turning it on will allow you to use your mouse wheel and alt key by default to adjust them. But you can also add Window Specific settings to activate by default when a program/window is opened. Which I set a few of mine like Nautilus to 90%.

Cheers,
Joe

Have you ever considered writing a noob-friendly step by step tutorial (with all the necessary code included) about how to set this up? Perhaps it's even possible to create some kind of script that did all the work automatically?

I tell you, any OS that looked this good by default would attract a lot of users based on the elegance of the look alone.

Yeah, epcot. I think it's also called Geodesic.

The wallpaper itself is called "The 21st Century" by Louis Mantia. I believe he's worked with Steve Jobs designing icons etc for Apple;
http://mantia.me/wallpaper/the-21st-century/

He's got a few that are references to 'geek culture' but they're quite subtle and elegant. Not as in-your-face as a lot of the fan-art that you see around.
