This seems to be a perennial problem with Ubuntu, and this is more a complaint than a real question. For some reason, I cannot get any kind of decent resolution with my monitor on any version of Ubuntu. Admittedly, I have an old system, but the resolution is stuck at 640x480. I've tried every command line trick I can find on the web, but nothing works. Yet, I can pop a Slitaz or Knoppix CD into the CDROM drive, and I can choose any resolution the monitor itself supports. My only work-around with Ubuntu is to change monitors. Some work, but most don't. I've been a Ubuntu user for about 5 years now, and have always had problems with displays. What is it about the Ubuntu developer community that cannot seem to make a more universal way to deal with monitors?
