I have change my desktop to Unity. In a non-touchable device this a very uncomfortable experience.
I was searching about some way to change the ridiculous size of the vertical scrollbar, and then I have found this explanation about this feature:

"Introducing Overlay Scrollbars in Unity
Problem: Today's scrollbars are optimized for cursor driven UI but they became easily unnecessary and bulky on touchable and small screen devices. In those cases, optimization of the screen's real-estate becomes essential. "
* http://design.canonical.com/2011/03/introducing-overlay-scrollbars-in-unity/

it seems these experts starts this new design ignoring the billions of devices without a touchable screen. Unity desktop is a nice and good desktop for touchable devices, although Ubuntu reject to detect the touchable or non-touchable device to install different desktops.

Obviously, with this behaviour the consumers are being forced to throw thousand computers to trash, and to buy new touchable devices.

This wild behaviour is beyond a problem of a desktop design. This is the opposite of any ecological responsibility with the world.
Today there is many people buying touchable devices, and this new market is enough to feed the innovations in this area. However, it seems this is not enough. It seems this is is just about money: more and more and more and more money.

Every year billion of tones of old computers and devices are send to Africa to feed a crazy market and to cover the right development of a whole continent.

Ubuntu company: please don't use the marketing of an earth-friendly discourse because you are exactly in the opposite side.

I really really wish this Unity is for touch devices meme would stop.

The global menu is Unity is a small menu, only visible on hover, how exactly is that for a touch device?

As for your specific issue, (which also only appears on hover) Overlay Scrollbars can be used with a mouse. The video on the page you posted demonstrates this.

Different != touchscreen UI

This is the opposite of any ecological responsibility with the world.

I damn near spit out my coffee laughing at this line. Overlay scrollbars destroying the ecology of the world? These Unity-hate rants get more and more extreme every day. What's next? The global menu causes global warming?

does anyone read the forums before posting ?

This topic has been flogged to death.

the answer is the same as its always been, use whatever works for you, no desktop environment is forced it is just another choice.

If you dont like Unity, feel free to NOT use it and use whatever DE/WM you want.

Peace

Thread moved to Recurring Discussions. (even though I am pretty sure another of these threads is pointless...)
